Can anyone recommend a shipping company? I have about 3 cubic meters max. (boxes), travelling alone and looking for a small house to rent. My pension is about E. 1700. I can afford up to E. 800 monthly rent.

A house is difficult to find and if I book a flight, it could be canceled at short notice as in the past, undermining my chances to appear at any possible viewings.

I'd be so relieved for any ideas in these matters.

Hi Liam and other nomads,

Some notes and then some questions about UpackWeShip—would love to know if others think there is a better deal out there.

We are looking to move back in April to Ireland from Washington DC. And after looking at this site, are leaning towards UpackWeShip. We got on their website and then called them. Learned some interesting things.

1. They offer three sizes of shipment, pallet, U crate and container. Its all clear on the site, but what’s not clear is that you should pack up with your own materials (from Walmart or online) beforehand and know how many pallets or u crates you need. If you don’t use one, you lose the deposit and if you need to order more than you originally asked for you have to pay extra shipping (e.g. $250 per u crate).

2. The sizes for the u crates are outside dimensions, but not inside. E.g. when they say 1 u crate has 100 sq feet, inside it can only store 81 sq. Feet. I only found that out by asking. Though its somewhere deep in their site, they say.

3. It takes about 6 weeks for them to ship.

With all that in mind, and we have about 250 cubic feet to ship, we are Thinking we will go with these guys and get three U crates which will cost us $4050 all in plus insurance. Do folks think that is a good deal?

Things i liked about them: (1) its a family business and Natalie, one of the family was clear with all her answers on the phone, (2) the website is very transparent, (3) no hidden charges that I can see, (4) we pack ourselves and can take all the time we need, (5) I think (think) its pretty good value for what we are trying to move.

Hello all,

Has anyone had experience shipping an oddly sized container to Ireland? I plan on bringing my harp (yes the instrument) and I'm debating whether I should take it with me in cargo on the plane or have it shipped. (It will be treated roughly either way in my experience.) I have a carbon fiber shipping case that is oddly sized, but definitely up to the task. However, I doubt USPS would take it because of its dimensions. I've shipped this container via Fedex and UPS, but never internationally.

I'm only staying for 3 months, so I'm probably not shipping any other containers if I do this. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tanya

So, I intend to ship my belongings via a FCL in advance of my home renovation being complete, in order to avoid the timing nightmares and delays that I've read about on this forum. One of the options Schumacher presented was long-term storage thru their (un-named) partner in Ireland. The estimate contains a hefty line item for a 10-month alotment of storage fees. It is unclear whether they would store the entire container or unload into a storage unit. My guess is the latter, but I would seek clarification. On the other hand, I have found a self-storage facility reasonably close to where my home is, which is a bit more expensive but would provide me with the ability to go in and out and obtain things gradually as needed even if parts of my renovation are not yet complete. I may be answering my own question here, but wouldn't it be better to take delivery of the container sooner rather than later to make sure everything arrived than letting it sit with the shipping company for several months, even if it means paying a little bit more for a private storage unit?

So, my Dad hand-carved a fireplace mantel that sat above the house that I grew up in for decades. After he passed, my Mom sold the house but I asked her to exclude the mantel from the sale and asked to have it. Thus, I now have the mantel in my POD waiting for shipping to my place in Ireland (along with my other household goods), which I think would make him quite happy. However, after reading about pallets and the special heat-treated, stamped wood that needs to be used in making them for international shipping, I now have this nightmare playing in my head that my Dad's mantel will get rejected entry because it is effectively a giant hunk of wood, or cause other clearance issues. Could it not be a problem because it is ancient, and was effectively heated over several years sitting over the fireplace? Should I be concerned about this or not ?
