Brining in items via checked luggage

My plan is that for the items I need most immediately, that I'm going to bring them via extra checked luggage - and extra 4-5 suitcases, and yes, that's expensive, but I consider that part of the cost of moving. My question is, if I'm bringing these in as personal items, am I going to get killed on customs fees and VAT, especially if I have items like a laptop and a digital SLR that could go beyond a few hundred Euro?
