We have settled nicely in Dundalk (here 6 months), with our dearest belongings sent by post (see my previous Topic in this category), and more bought at Ikea. Now we miss many of the things we have in storage in the US. We already donated stuff and downsized, before we left Atlanta. We have about 1000 cubic feet of belongings, in a 10x15x8' storage unit. I figure we will probably put it into a 20' container not shared. (1360 cu. ft.).
I am wondering how much this will cost to ship, door-to-door from our storage unit in Atlanta to our house. I have not begun to collect quotations yet, because I wanted to hear some real world examples from you all! How much did it cost to ship your stuff from the US, if that is where you came from?
I am especially interested in a total amount for a 20' container. Even if you have a ballpark estimate that would be helpful.
Also, if you have any removals companies in Ireland to recommend, please let me know. Liam and others here have gotten me quite worried about getting stuck with a bad one.

Hopefully we get a few other responses, but in the meantime I dug into some of the previous topics and found the following:
David says he was quoted $5500 for a 20ft container here.
Teresa was given a quote of $7000 for 2/3 of a 40ft container here.
And, if it helps, I found you can store a 20ft container for approx 30euro per month in Dublin. Details here.
We were just quoted for a 20ft container out of NJ to Ireland...Liffey Van Lines $5,150 (if you pack the container yourself, they drop the container and you have two hours to load, after that its $85 per hour for however long it takes to fill ) and $8600 for full-service door to door move. Schumacher cargo logistics quoted $6395 for full service door to door (they pack and load everything - both sides).

This forum is amazingly helpful, thanks to everyone for being so specific. I'm moving from Maine in September if the sale of my b&b goes ahead (fingers crossed). Has anyone any advice on a shipper from this area, or does it matter if they are based elsewhere? Basically any info at all would be hugely appreciated!

From what I've seen most of the major shipping companies seem to operate nationally, or even globally. There are local companies too of course, but I haven't researched any in Maine. I think what you'll find is that whatever shipper you go through, they will have local contacts i.e. to do the packing, pickup, transportation to port etc. I remember being told by a company that I used, that your shipment may change hands along the way as many as 5-7 times.Â
My main recommendation would be to get plenty of like for like quotes, and see what your options are. The more time you can give yourself to plan, the better. It's an expensive part of moving, so it's worth giving it plenty of upfront attention.Â

Another interesting topic. We live in Washington State and have yet to get quotations. Is it better to get the container packed by the professionals? Do they provide all the packaging material and boxes themselves?Â
@annabelle49 if you choose a full service option, packaging/boxes etc will be included. Be sure to get many quotes, and be sure you get precise details from them on what is included, and what's not.Â
We are moving from Montgomery, Alabama, to County Wexford this summer. I have three quotes, all for 40 ft container. Two are from Irish companies: 10,625 EUROS plus insurance and 10,596 EUROS (includes insurance). Both quotes include full packing, port charges, customs clearance, and door to door service. I have one US-company quote: $10,255 (does not include port charge or insurance). Two other companies (one US, one Irish) I did not hear back from. (And if I have to beg you just to give me a quote, I'm just going to move on to someone else.) So basically the two Irish quotes are roughly the same and the US quote is roughly 2,000 EUROS less. But my gut instinct tells me I might be better off going with one of the two Irish companies, just based on my dealings so far. (And I feel like the US company might end up tacking on more charges before it's all said and done.) Also I feel like if there are any issues, they would most likely arise on the destination end, and maybe it would be better to have an Irish company handling the transaction.
