Looking forward to getting lots of information on our forthcoming move to N. Ireland. I'm from Co. Down married to an Irish/American who I have finally convinced to move home. We're both retired, my husband a Retired US Army officer. Our main concern at the moment is how my husbands pensions will be affected, if at all. I receive my pension from U.K. Also our Social Security from the US, how that would be affected. So I'm sure I'll find lots of good information here. Can't wait to get started.

hi my name is Ronan originally from Ireland and living in Vancouver working  as a mechanic, thinking of moving home but wanted to bring my tools and tool box, some of my furniture and possibly a car if it wasn't to much hassle, it would be a track car so not one for driving on the road, was thinking of arranging a 20 ft container but hard to choose a company that you can trust, any company names ?  does anybody know if I have to pay custom fees entering Ireland?the fact they are my own personal tools and not for resale, and my car won't be driven on the roads so do I still need to pay vrt tax ? thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any suggestions.

hello! me and my other half are in the talks about moving to ireland, ive wanted to live there for the longest time ( im in liverpool born here ) my nan and her family are from southen ireland/cork and my great granparents came over to liverpool rest is history, but they left behinde a big family of sherlocks! never to see or hear from again sadly, nan did try track some of them down but sadly couldnt find anyone. nan passed away a year half ago now and i want to take my little family where our roots lay and maybe even try and track down the sherlocks of ireland.

before we come we have to learn to drive! lol we need a speical education schhol for our youngest son and we also need to know what schools ( high schools) are like hospitals doctors dentists ect if there is work ect housing whats that like? im really wanting to start off ether in ballina or cork but im afraid im blind! and trying to find out out much as i can before i even start the process of moving x

Me and my family are from Canada and hoping to make a move to Ireland in the next few months.  I'm hoping this forum will help us in our endeavour.

Hi I'm Faith and hubs is Alan our families emigrated to Canada back in the mid 60's but for both of us it never felt like home. So thanks to house sitting we have been able to explore areas of Ireland both North and South to figure out where we want to live. We are currently in the North and have spent a great deal of time here, in Tipperary, Donegal and Dublin. I have a blog about our travels and we have decided that Donegal is the place for us we just love it there.

I'm Peter, and I have just been accepted as a MSc student at NUI, Galway! I'm very excited to complete my education and liver overseas for the first time! However, a bit of reality is setting in as I look into the realities and logistics of the move.

By way of background, I'm a community college instructor and lab technician, in the specialized field of microscopy and biological imaging. I love what I do, but am a bit underemployed due to my lack of an advanced degree. It has been my plan for the last few years to put my house on the market, pay off my debts, and go through a short (under 2-year) Master's program. As it turns out, this year it's coming to fruition!

I hadn't originally planned on studying overseas, but after not finding a Professional Science Master's program in California and looking at the fact that Master's programs in the UK and Ireland often take only one year and actually cheaper in per-year tuition than out-of-state tuition elsewhere in the US, the idea started to sound very attractive. (Albeit, moving expenses will eat up a lot of that difference.) As it turned out, the program in Microscopy and Imaging at NUI Galway was a perfect fit, and I was admitted very soon after submitting my application.

So now I'm planning the big move from the SF Bay Area to Galway! I know I'm going to have to downsize considerably, and leave quite a bit in storage over the next year. But even though I'll look for a furnished apartment or flat, there's still quite a few personal effects I do want to bring over, notably, my good cookware, and a collection of my more specialized books that I won't so easily be able to re-purchase.

In many ways, this feels very liberating, as once I'm done with the MSc program (and perhaps some followup education in electronics), I'm willing to re-locate again practically anywhere in the world as long as it's a nice place to live and the job is lucrative. And for the next year or so, I get to live in an amazing place like Galway!

If anybody else here has been in a similar situation, I definitely value your input.
