I'm planning on moving to Ireland later this year to be with my partner and I'm here to get some guidance on how to move my life over there. We have a home base set up in Limerick already but I still have a lot of things to figure out on my end (including getting my cat over there.) Hopefully, I can make some great connections here to help make everything go a little more smoothly before and after the move!

My name is Danielle and I am currently a United States citizen. I just recently made the trip to Ireland to visit my boyfriend for the first time after talking for nearly a year. As crazy as it sounds, we are wanting to get married and move me to Ireland, so I am hoping that this forum can help me out with the process. I have no idea where to begin and I have researched some, but I haven't found anything quite exactly what I need to know.

I know we have to give at least 3 months notice before we plan on marrying, but I was concerned about the two interviews. Would those be completed while I was on my short-term stay? It would get expensive to go there and come back several times. And if I go there to marry, it is absolutely necessary to have to leave and apply for the long-term visa or is there a way around that?

I look forward to getting to know all of you and learn how to make this all work out! 🙂

There's some good info on pets here, and you can find more buy googling. Unfortunately, it's not going to provide you with very good news. Ireland and the UK are particularly strict about animals coming in. Not as strict as they used to be (6 weeks quarantine!!) but not as open as a lot of other EU countries. For instance, airlines cannot allow pets in the cabin on flights coming in; they have to be in crates in the hold. There's very specific paperwork and timing that must be followed. Most of the advice I've seen has been to use a professional pet shipper. The cost is not inconsiderable, you'd best budget at least $1000. For a short term like 3 months, you may be better off looking for a temporary foster home. (I know! NOT what you want to hear. You want to take the family along) 
You could also look into a workaround like flying into a different EU country, spending enough time there to get an EU "pet passport" (yes, that's a thing) and then traveling on to Ireland. If you try that please let me know how it goes! I'm planning a more permanent move and am trying to strategize getting the feline there smoothly.

Yes, I've heard about the restrictions on having pets in the cabin, etc. 

I've also done some research and it looks like Ireland lets you bring your pet into the country, so long as they have the correct shots, etc. 

I have a friend who got a pet passport for her dog and my sister traveled to the UK (via France) with her parrot about 10 years ago, so I have a bunch of people I can ask questions of too.

New member here. This site has already been very helpful and I am glad to finally register and introduce myself. (My screen name is Kevin in Irish, alas without the accent above the í) A little about me: I am a scientist living in Southern California. I was born here, but lived in Canada and the San Francisco Bay Area for many years (grad school, postdocs, etc.). My grandmother was born in Dublin in 1911; we have the birth record listing her address, date of birth, her father's occupation (worked for Guinness), etc. My other ancestors are mostly Irish as well, and on my father's side, they come from county Limerick. On both sides, we have traced them back for many generations, dating to the late 1700s. My grandmother was very proud of our Irish heritage and always had a big party on St. Patrick's, and frequently would tell me about life in Ireland when she was growing up. She was 5 at the time of the Easter Rising and had vivid memories of it. 

My wife and I finally visited Ireland for a few weeks last year. We spent a week in Dublin (National Museum of Archaeology, Chester Beatty Library, Hugh Lane Gallery, Guinness Storehouse, Newgrange, Glendlough, etc), then rented a car and visited Kilkenny, Cork, Dingle, Kenmare, and Ennis before flying home out of Shannon. We absolutely loved it--the Wild Atlantic way, countryside, people, food (we were amazed at how delicious everything was). I even loved the rain! (we live in SoCal, where it never, ever rains 🙁 I've always been a fish out of water in SoCal--terrible place.  

In any case, we are going to go back and see the north side of the island in another year or so. My relatives go nearly every year, and have been giving us some good advice. 

Part of my interest in this form is that I am going to apply for Irish Citizenship. From what I understand, from everything I've heard and read  (e.g.,    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/moving_country/irish_citizenship/irish_citizenship_through_birth_or_descent.html#l97318 ), I qualify based on my grandmother. My 2nd (?) cousin (grand-daughter of my grandmother's sister--also born in Dublin) just received her citizenship and is applying for a passport. 

We have no immediate plans to move over there right now, but would like to have it as an option in the future, even if only for retirement (probably 15-20 years off). I was amazed to see how affordable houses are over there. 

Anyway, what I could use help with is any advice about applying for citizenship. For one thing, I am following the guidelines on this site:  https://www.dfa.ie/passports-citizenship/citizenship/born-abroad/registering-a-foreign-birth/

I assume this is the correct one? Obviously, there are a ton of documents to procure and assemble. I am dealing with the ones in the U.S. However my one question is: 

What is the correct site and procedure for obtaining my Irish-born grandmother's birth certificate? I have seen a variety of sites offering this, but I'm not sure which one is the one I should use. Having lived in Canada for four years, and also having visited Russia, I know that there are many sites offering such services and documents, but not all of them are legitimate! Some are outright frauds, and some may not be offering the exact services you need.

Any help on this particular issue and advice on applying would be of great interest. Thanks!
