Buying and selling used goods in Ireland
Thank you to William in Pittsburg who is planning on moving to Ireland towards the latter part of 2015 for sending in this question.
I regularly use Craigslist here in Pittsburg to buy and sell used furniture, garden equipment, tools etc. The Irish Craigslist site does not seem to have the same level of popularity. Is there an alternative to Craigslist in Ireland?
There are plenty of options available in Ireland for finding used goods. The websites below have listings in a wide variety of categories including furniture, clothing, DIY gear, baby goods, autos, sports equipment and more. Some charge a fee to place an ad, but for the buyer it looks like it's free to browse the ads and contact the sellers. In some cases you may need to sign up for the site to contact the seller.

Also, lately I am seeing a lot of 'local' Facebook groups where people advertise their unwanted items to people in the group. Some people are even offering things for free in these groups so it's worth searching for these groups.
Lastly, I recommend giving Groupon Ireland a try for certain items. They do have a Home & Garden section, as well as various other general categories, and they often have very good deals on brand new items.
If I missed any great places to buy/sell used goods in Ireland please let me know or add a comment below.

Great article. In the Midwest of the US, I find that people are especially into buying previously owned. Up until 08′ it was rare enough in Ireland. I can’t speak for everywhere in North America, but you are more likely to find a good deal on used goods in Ireland particularly electronics compared to my current city. The cost of cars as well tends to taper off significantly after a certain age, whereas in the Midwest, it seems like a 10 year old car is still over $7,000 to purchase. All in all it’s different and a really good topic for people to look into when moving to Ireland. I really enjoy the local facebook groups too 🙂
As nice as it is to buy all new things when you arrive in a new country, the reality is most people need to consider the costs associated to that. Moving is expensive! Moving country is wildly expensive! I say cut costs where possible.
There are some things I would never buy used (a bed being number one on that list), but if I can get a good deal on used general household goods, I won’t turn it down.
Gumtree.ie is another resource for buying and selling, as well as rentals and part time jobs.
Thanks Sarah. I’ll check out GumTree. Are they much the same as the other websites? I’m guessing they all are much the same, and if you’re looking for something second hand, then it’s best to search them all.
There is always ebay.ie although a lot of things will be UK sourced, Ireland doesn’t seem to have grasped ebay despite some of it being based here.
Another problem is the apparent lack of being able to put a price to anything which can be an annoyance if looking to put together a number of items for a fixed budget. Always be prepared to haggle a little.
Thanks for that Tony. Completely forgot about eBay. I don’t use it myself.
I just browsed the site, and you’re right, many items are UK based. A lot in fact. However if you scroll way down the page (on the desktop site) on the left, there’s a bunch of filters. One lets you specify Ireland only based items. See screenshot:
