Thank you Daniela and Liam. I am still terrified I am going to screw up moving my Cat to Ireland, but have to say this site has been incredibly help.
Hi -- I'm Mallory!
I'm planning on moving to Ireland later this year to be with my partner and I'm here to get some guidance on how to move my life over there. We have a home base set up in Limerick already but I still have a lot of things to figure out on my end (including getting my Cat over there.) Hopefully, I can make some great connections here to help make everything go a little more smoothly before and after the move!

I've been researching the "cat in cabin" thing pretty hard. There are some airlines that will, in theory, allow Cats in the cabin on transatlantic flights to Europe. The problem is that Ireland and the UK have their own regulations, which require pets to be below in the baggage hold. So while you could fly to most EU countries with your pet in the cabin, it won't work in Susan's case (or mine, darn it).
Hello, I'm Tanya, I'm looking to move to Ireland for 3 months, starting in September. My goal is to bring my work with me and live and work in Ireland during that time. I'm a copywriter, so all I need to work is an internet connection, my computer, and electricity. (I checked with the Irish Immigration department, I can live and work for myself in Ireland for 3 months, no longer. To stay longer, I'd have to be sponsored by an Irish company.)
My goal on this site is to find out how much utilities generally cost per month, where I could rent a relatively inexpensive car for 3 months and anything else I need to know before I, my Cat, and my harp come across the ocean. (Yes, I play the harp. Yes, I play Celtic music. Of course, I'm going to bring the harp.)
If anyone knows of an Irish company willing to sponsor a freelance copywriter for a year, I'd love to know about it, that would mean I could extend my stay. 🙂
Cheers and thanks.
... 4 Cats... 1 will come in cabin and 3 in cargo. I'm in the process of getting all the details and can share what I find.
We did 2 years in Switzerland and returned 5 years ago. In each instance we flew Swiss airlines and we could bring our Cat (only had one then), in cabin, under the seat. We bought an extra seat and that WAy it WAs easier for my husband to reach down and talk to him... I managed the kids in a different row.
Try Delta. I know it's not possible with Aer Lingus, and I think United only does it domestically in the US. I'm also lookin ...
... a small Cat, and I WAnt to bring her - has anyone done this by bringing their small pet in the cabin of plane?
Im not sure where in Ireland we will be locating, not sure if we should sell everything here and just rent a furnished place. We will be there for 2-3 years likely then would probably return to Canada.
So stressed about costs of moving, cost of living (our income between 2 of us will be approx 45,000 euro after taxes - and purchase of car etc
all info appreciated!
Thanks
Sarah
