My understanding is like an internationally recognized notary of your existing license, and the IDP is only valid with the license.
In the US IDP's are issues through AAA offices, and expiration date is Set to the same as your current driver's license. I am holding off on getting an IDP until I renew my California Driver's License again because it expires in early 2016 currently.
I think that the biggest thing that worries my american husband and myself (irish) is that we have jobs that are popular in America yet don't seem to have become popular in Ireland yet i.e. GIS and dental hygiene. We are just worried that moving back to Ireland will be a Set back. Crime wise, you can't get worse than some of the places here in America so that isn't much of an issue for us.
Hi Sarah,
I do not know of anyone who has made a trans-atlantic flight with their pet in the cabin of the plane. In fact each time I have flown with my pets, the only option WAs in the cargo area. This is the norm in the US anyway, and I'm guessing is the same from Canada.
I tried finding more info by looking on Air Canada's website. They say there are country restrictions, but couldn't find what those were. However on another site, there WAs a mention of a number of countries that you cannot fly your pet in the cabin. Ireland WAs not listed, but the UK WA ...
Hi Liam: my partner and I are Set on moving to Ireland (Rosguill Peninsula) early 2018. We are both US citizens. Probably going to buy a house and live there at least a year, then decide from there. Neither of us will work, so no need for employment-related visas, and banking / money issues seem moot since everything's over the internet/via credit cards these days and I have several credit cards with no foreign transaction fees.
On the subject of a visa: our plan is simply to come into the Republic on 3 month tourist visas, and leave/reenter the Republic every 11 weeks or so, essentially restarting the tourist visa. Unless I miss my guess, this should be as easy as flying back to the States for a week or so, the returning to Ireland. Once the UK completes Brexit, it will be even easier; simply drive to Belfast.
Seems too easy, in fact, but I can't find anything in my research that indicates it's not doable. Thoughts?
... a program in place to allow you to open one from overseas.
The issue of investments is a little more complicated e.g. are you planning to bring 401k funds, do you WAnt to Set up a retirement account in Ireland etc... There are plenty of investment companies. None that I personally recommend, but one of the major ones is Irish Life. I'd recommend you read this info also,
Hello, dear compatriots. I have my dual Irish citizenship and passport so don’t have to concern myself with visas and the like. I will be relocating in the coming months from the US. I don't expect, but not certain, that I will end up permanently residing in Ireland. I have a budget that is better suited for less economically robust countries. However I know there are official/legal issues I must work out prior to living elsewhere in the EU. For instance, banking and financial representation. Also, medical health affiliations and associated documents and cards (I depend on a medication after having my thyroid removed). Must I have established residence prior to gaining access to these services? Anything I can accomplish before I Set out abroad? Anything any one could contribute to answering would be greatly appreciated. Or point me in the right Direction?
I plan on a month (is that sufficient?) in Dublin (or is another city ok for getting things done?) before Setting out to explore other EU options. If I feel at home in Eire perhaps I’ll stay put! I’m an artist and perhaps ‘The Dole’ would be an enticement. Thanks
... dogs. We have looked at WAles but Ireland seems more affordable and more relaxing . Our only reservation is the heath service in Ireland , we are both active but have ongoing illnesses that need prescription drugs every month. I've tried to research how much this will cost but it all seems very confusing. We don't mind paying it's just trying to work out how much it will Set us back for medical insurance and paying for prescriptions. Apart from that I'm looking forward to returning to my roots my maternal grandfather came from Drogheda originally. Thank you ...
Hi All, I've lived in the US for 26 years. My family and I are moving back to Ireland sometime in September 2017.
House is under contract "Sold", We'll miss it. Getting a 40ft container, A 20 footer wouldn't do it. $1,000 more by the WAy.
I applied for my US Citizenship in December of 2016. I got my interview notice for the end of August 2017. I've seen questions about getting US citizenship before moving back. What are the Pro's and Con's? Should or shouldn't I will the timing work out for me anyway.?
Starting to write my resignation letter for the Co ...
Hi Sinead, welcome to the site.
I'm not overly familiar with the medical Set up in the UK, but I have a feeling that it may be better there than in Ireland for a person with a long term condition.
Eligibility for a medical card in Ireland is based on your income level. They means test each application. Here's a quote taken Directly from HSE.ie : "Medical card eligibility is based on an assessment of means. To qualify your weekly income must be below the income threshold. Any income, savings, investments and property (except for your own home) are taken into account in the means test."
I'd suggest reading all the eligibility information at this link

Of course I have been gathering as much information on the web. I have been trying to understand the schooling and still not sure how to compare it to school here in the states. I currently live in WAshington state, but grew up in New Jersey, USA. I have been looking at Kilkenny area to live, but that is not Set in stone. I am hoping to get a lot of information from this site or ask questions. Th ...
