Hello Everyone, My Husband and I are ablaze with desire to relocate from the US to Ireland. My grandparents were born in Ireland and I Have obtained Irish citizenship and Have an Irish passport. I will turn 66 in May of 2018 and will collect Social Security. My Husband, an American, and I plan to work in Ireland. We plan to look for work once we arrive. We would like to rent an inexpensive apt in Cork City. Here is my concern of the moment. I Have Heard that landlords may not rent to unemployed people. Will it be difficult to rent without yet being employed. We do Have some savings to fund our transition time, but not a lot. We plan to open a bank account in Ireland before we leave the US. I am a retired RN. I currently work as a licensed massage therapist and teacher of yoga and contemporary dance. Another thought is that...if a landlord won't rent to unemployed new arrivals, perhaps we can find a roommate situation to start off with. Is there an on-line site for finding roommate rental situations in Cork? ~ Also Does anyone know How much the US and the Irish government will tax my Social Security income. Our pets likely won't Have pet passports a day after arriving in the UK, but I plan on using my third country pet certificate to take them on board the ferry. I'll contact Irish Ferries to verify this is okay and get back to you when I get a reply. I also looked into using PO Ferries from Liverpool to Dublin, but the trip WAs too long at 8 Hours.

@fionaz and anyone else Having difficulty with this. I played around with Daft.ie today searching for rentals that will allow pets. If you go to their 'advanced search' option, you can choose that as one of your criteria in the search. As an example a search in Dublin City, with no other options set, returned 65 results. Of course, other factors will limit your selection e.g. price, location etc, but at least it's a starting point.

You're referring to the 'help to buy' scheme, right @dorzak ? There are plenty of new Housing developments around the country. There were popping up all over Cork City suburbs where I lived. And most would fall under the 400k cap. Try this view on myhome.ie Click on the map view button and then zoom in on an area to see what's new. The map view is misleading at first until you zoom in, because it only shows Hits in Dublin and Cork.

Hi Hanna, As Tony mentioned, Dublin and Cork are the two big employment cities, with Dublin really dwarfing anywhere else in terms of number of opportunities. It's a very compact City too; very WAlkable. Public transport is good too - bike rental, bus, light rail, intercity rail etc. As regards cheaper cost of living, I'd say Limerick and Galway would definitely be better options, but many people commute to Dublin from surrounding counties due to the employment opportunities. ... as Liam said, there are plenty of commuter towns around the City, some with access to public transportation so you may not even Have to drive. The further out you go the cheaper it will get! If you go outside of Dublin you are more likely to get what you need for a better price. I worry about the weather in regards to my Husband who WAs born and raised in California. Mairead, there are parts of Healthcare that I both love and Hate in Ireland. The fact I Have Had the same doctor at Home since I WAs born (who both my mother and grandmother use) who knows me and my family History, its relatively cheap in comparison to the US. However, i am aware of overcrowding in Hospitals, old buildings, staff shortages etc. There are good and bad parts to every country, i think we just need to figure out if the good parts are worth moving back for.
