... for the purpose of immigration has been illegal for one year, and illegal for many years in America." We said, okay! Haha. Then I WAs brought in first to be interviewed. Here are the questions that I WAs asked (that I can remember, anyway. I WAs SOOOOO nervous. I am going to refer to my SO as "John"): - How long have you known John? - When did you meet? - Where did you meet? (they asked me to be specific, as in the name of the pub. ha!!!) - How many times have you been to Ireland, including your first visit? - Why were you in Ireland on your first visit? ...

... I assume we won’t be issued an MRF straight away, if so there would be no Point in having the meeting as this MRF would expire within the 6 months. So will they issue it to us at a later date closer to our marriage date or should I postpone this meeting? - This is tricky. I don't actually know the concrete answer to this. Here's my situation: We have the "notice" in person on July 4. We had this "interview" on Monday that made sure we were "legitimate" on Sept 12. We have to WAit two weeks to get "approved," and then we pick a date. She just said if we did ...

... I can't WAit to be interviewed, I could declare my love for her all day. We have known each other for years but our relationship is comparatively short. We will be having a civil ceremony in the registry office and having a wedding at a different date and so my questions are: 1.) Our first notification to marry meeting is in November and we plan to marry in August. I assume we won't be issued an MRF straight away, if so there would be no Point in having the meeting as this MRF would expire within the 6 months. So will they issue it to us at a later date cl ...

... a permanent status? Also, why would anyone buy a home in Ireland not knowing how long they will be able to live there? Maybe the Ministry does not WAnt foreigners buying property for fear of a housing bubble. But how much of an impact could a few hundred or a even few thousand retirees have on the Irish housing market?> Let's ask a few Irish estate agents what they think.

Ok, I'll add that non-exlusive verbiage. That page is a template I grabbed online at some Point. A CYA page basically. Number 6 does seem to cover it though. I'm not sure it would ever be needed on a small site like this, but who's to say. Thanks for the tips. Appreciate the help.

Shipping a car to Ireland from the U.S.?

Good Point, Kate. I always recommend my US tourist buddies to rent small cars. As small as will accommodate their need while on holiday. My in-laws shipped 2 monsters by all accounts, and had terrible problems on some roads. Roads are a lot better these days, but in the countryside, it'd definitely would be an issue. Personally I think it's better to do what you did. Just take the hard hit, and be done with it.

Give it a try whenever you're ready Kate. You can do it from the profile and activity page. Good Point ,David. I'll need to add some basic terms, if I don't already have them on the 'terms' page. My expectation is that people only upload photos that they have taken themselves.

Filing u.s taxes and covered ca

@kwalsh112 I'll write about it another time, but I got badly screwed by CA for taxes. Essentially they taxed all the money I made in Ireland as if I had been living in CA the entire year. So I paid tax on that income in 2 places. The foreign exclusion credit applies for federal purposes (from what I understand). The IRS does not tax income up to a Point (that's the 95-100 ish amount). I think this only applies to countries where there is a tax treaty (Ireland being one of those countries). CA on the other hand, has no such treaty. Consult with a tax pro for your own unique scenario is my best advice really. Taxes for Expats have been my go-to service. I don't think every state has the same (over)reach as CA, but find out in advance so there's no shocks.

Wow, thanks Kate. This is really helpful. Based in your experience I'm guessing it's not exactly an enjoyable experience of any sort. But I'm glad that ye seem to have gotten a hold on everything that's needed. Looking forward to hearing how things turn out. At some Point I'll gather all this stamp 4 info, and post it in a blogpost so it's easier to find/read for others. Really appreciate the updates.

Brexit - any thoughts

This has been interesting for my family because the brexit vote is causing a delay in my husbands job transfer. His employer is a very large multinational and while there is an office in Dublin and his position would be based out of Dublin, it is technically tied to their UK operations. Since neither side is really stating what the UK would look like if it split from the EU, his employer basically has a hold on all positions at the moment. If they do leave the EU, does that mean business operations would have to be split? If so, does the ROI have enough business to support itself if his company made their own ROI branch? How does it affect NI? Currently, there are people that work out of the Dublin office that are UK citizens through NI - do they no longer have a job if brexit actually occurs? I am sure his employer is not the only one going through this, considering how many multinationals are based in the UK and even here in Ireland. Personally, I don't see the Point of the UK leaving the EU and it seems like it will cause a lot more disruption and chaos than anything. If they do, would they fall under the EEA therefore still allowing UK/EU citizens to work in any of the EEA countries?
