@kevin Thank you, Kevin. This is very helpful. I have been quiet for a few weeks because, following receipt of my Stamp 0 acceptance letter, I made a quick trip to Dublin to put things into order. I have requested the PPSN and reached out to VHI for a quote. My understanding is that I need to have a residential address in place before VHI will proceed with a private health policy. (I now have a property under contract.) In my discussions with Medicare, I learned that I can keep Part A, release Part B, keep Part D (prescriptions) as long as I have either Part A or Part B, and release my supplemental plan. I had a discussion with a firm that provides health insurance plans for people who are truly multinational; the premiums run $4600+ Per year. If we are only traveling to the US to visit, not to spend part of the year in US and part in IE, travelers insurance should provide basic coverage should there be a need. At least this is what I have been told. All the comments and suggestions on this discussion thread are very, very helpful. THANK YOU - everyone - for posting from your experience. Kind regards Pat

Hi all, I'm expecting to be in Ireland for about 3 months and I do WAnt the flexibility of being able to drive around, even if I am located in a city or town. Does anyone know of a dealership or company that does a short-term car lease? I looked at Enterprise Rent-A-Car and they WAnted over €700 Per month. I WAs hoping to find something cheaper. Unfortunately, the places I'm looking at living don't have a Go-Car service nearby. Any ideas?

... or immigration advice nor should it be solely relied upon for your own move, it's just a nice starting point for considerations to make if you are someone in a similar situation. About me: - I had a job lined up before moving to Dublin. My work Permit WAs applied for and approved while I WAs in the US. It WAs sponsored by my new employer.- I live a minimalist lifestyle. I did not need contents relocation (someone shows up, packs your stuff, puts it in a shipping container, and delivers to you in Ireland). I WAs moving via checked/excess luggage and mailing ...

We were just quoted for a 20ft container out of NJ to Ireland...Liffey Van Lines $5,150 (if you pack the container yourself, they drop the container and you have two hours to load, after that its $85 Per hour for however long it takes to fill ) and $8600 for full-service door to door move. Schumacher cargo logistics quoted $6395 for full service door to door (they pack and load everything - both sides).

... say that when scheduling care, especially with a "Consultant" (what is called a "Specialist" in the States) the WAit-time can be much longer (months) than what you are used to, but visiting your GP (General Practitioner/ Family Doctor) is a different story; we get in the same day (if necessary) or within the week...One unexpected consequence of my Irish Life Health policy, however, WAs that I WAs faced with a 'waiting Period' of six months from the date that our policy began. My wife and children received coverage immediately, but because of my age (65 at t ...

I am still trying to find an agent that will handle a self-owned container. I am finding that moving companies only offer the option of using their container - loaded/unloaded by them or self-loaded/unloaded. In the latter case they typically allow 2h for the container to be loaded after which it is $85-100 Per hour. No ramp or lift is provided so that option would require having this in place when the trailer arrives. The other option is to find a shipping agent that will handle pick-up, transport and drop-off of the container but that is proving difficult so I don't have any quotes yet to compare the cost of this option vs using movers with their own container. The total cost will include the price of the container and a crane to load the container on to the trailer at the time of pick-up. I can purchase a 20' container for $2750 including delivery and the seaworthy certificate. The crane will cost about $500-$750 depending on the total time required (they charge for the time from departure to return of the crane to their yard - which in my case will be between 2h-3h). I would welcome any suggestions for shipping agents that would be willing to handle a non-commercial container shipping job. Best regards, John

Are scholarships available for overseas students studying in Ireland?

I received this question today from an American student hoping to spend a couple of years in Ireland pursing her post-graduate degree. While the information I shared back to her WAs specific to post-grad work, there are also scholarships available for undergraduate courses. It appears each college administers their own scholarship program separate to the other colleges and universities. I’m hopeful that that means you can apply to more than one scholarship program at any one time. (if someone knows otherwise please let us know). What are the scholar ...

Hi Liam and other nomads, Some notes and then some questions about UpackWeShip—would love to know if others think there is a better deal out there. We are looking to move back in April to Ireland from WAshington DC. And after looking at this site, are leaning towards UpackWeShip. We got on their website and then called them. Learned some interesting things. 1. They offer three sizes of shipment, pallet, U crate and container. Its all clear on the site, but what’s not clear is that you should pack up with your own materials (from WAlmart or onlin ...

... requirements for American retirees and Permission to work in Ireland for up to 20 hours Per week. This is what has been reported in the press, all of which are Irish publications, with no further detail that I can find. If anyone have further information on this issue, please share. I am not sure if this legislation on E3 visas will survive the US Congress but if it does, this could be good news for Americans looking to retire to Ireland. That is, of course, if the new rules are fair and reasonable which WAs not the case in the last go-round where even ...
