RE: Short term car lease?
Cars and Driving

Hi Tanya, I personally can't give you a recommendation as I've never leased a car for that long. Based on normal rental costs, the number you said above seems ok to me, but I know it's a lot of money. Does that include insurance? I'm guessing if it does, it's basic, and not Full coverage. Insurance in Ireland on rentals is not cheap! I hear good things about dan dooley rental. No affiliation, just positive reviews etc. They do have a long term rental inquiry form if you're interested. Maybe renting on an as-needed basis might be a better option, e.g. if you're looking to get out sightseeing for a weekend here and there. Depending on where you are, public transport might suit most your needs.

RE: How much to ship 20' container from US to Ireland?

We are moving from Montgomery, Alabama, to County Wexford this summer. I have three quotes, all for 40 ft container. Two are from Irish companies: 10,625 EUROS plus insurance and 10,596 EUROS (includes insurance). Both quotes include Full packing, port charges, Customs clearance, and door to door service. I have one US-company quote: $10,255 (does not include port charge or insurance). Two other companies (one US, one Irish) I did not hear back from. (And if I have to beg you just to give me a quote, I'm just going to move on to someone else.) So basically the two Irish quotes are roughly the same and the US quote is roughly 2,000 EUROS less. But my gut instinct tells me I might be better off going with one of the two Irish companies, just based on my dealings so far. (And I feel like the US company might end up tacking on more charges before it's all said and done.) Also I feel like if there are any issues, they would most likely arise on the destination end, and maybe it would be better to have an Irish company handling the transaction.

Hello everyone! My name is Lily and I am new here. I WAs hoping maybe someone could give me some advice, answers or knowledge that could be helpful. If you would be kind enough to read through my back story, I will appreciate your patience. I am a South African citizen (grants me access to Ireland with no visa requirement for 90 days) married to a Dutch Citizen, we are both residing in South Africa at the moment. My husband has a very comfortable job at the moment, as he is positioned remotely, but the company he works for is South African, so he pays So ...

... don't even consider licensing status of others in house!) expect to pay Full coverage of 4,000 Euro a month for a lefthand drive --only Axa would give us coverage! Driver's license testing process $600+. Parking prices are very high in the cities, gas high everywhere. Car Issues: Automatics are much more expensive here and hard or impossible to find for many models. Most insurance companies WILL NOT cover lefthand drive cars (see Axa above)--BUT consider learning how to drive a manual with stick on the opposite side, a new car and new driving rules all at ...

Can I come over?

I have posted here before, but infrequently and probably not in a while. I obtained my dual citizenship with Ireland in 2016. My wife, who is American and cannot get Irish Citizenship would also be affected by what ever will hit us. I am weighing costs. What does it cost to live in Dublin, or Cork, or out West near Sligo? I understand it would be a broad picture of what reality costs, but I have no idea. I would have to get a Full time job and rent a 1 bedroom apt. Living in the USA is becoming very expensive, healthcare, housing, insurance (killing me). We will not be eligible for USA retirement until 2023 (age 63) at the earliest. So we would live and work in Ireland. Where do I start? If we move it would be in summer of 2018 when our 1 and only goes to college, probably here in the USA. My options would be to move in with my 85 year old mother (lives in San Jose, USA), who I like and really enjoys my and my wife company, move to Ireland and start fresh or figure something out in between. I know I would have to get a rental, get proof of renting to get healthcare, get a job and then there is my wife. What does she need to do? Lost and without answers. I read on the internets etc, seems like I will have to be "boots on the ground" and do research from Ireland. And it seems until you get to Ireland, all is up in the air until you visit the local Garda and state your intentions, and have a house and a job etc. Catch 22? Anyway, I appreciate any input and experiential help. Bob Elliott

Hello! My name is Kevin. My family (wife, 13 yr old son) and I are planning our emigration from the States to Ireland...I'm sure to have plenty of questions to post as our departure date draws near (right now it looks like early summer), but for now I'm busy 'shopping' for a shipper. We will have one Full 20' container (FCL) to ship (and probably a follow-up container of less timely items once we're settled) from Long Beach to Dublin. I'm surprised to hear of the wide disparity in prices that we are quoted, and worried that some shippers are merely trying to get out business with an attractive quote. My only questions at this point for The IMC : 1) Has anyone heard of / dealt with either Schumacher Cargo (based in Long Beach) or Inter Movers (based in New Jersey)? 2) Is there any shipping company that any IMC members would recommend? A shipper that stands head and shoulders above the rest for price and service? Any insights are appreciated. Thanks.

... policy that has affect in Ireland. The following link over at the INIS site explains why/how Regarding costs for medical, it can vary greatly. You could go with an Irish plan (e.g. VHI, BUPA etc), or a US based one that has Full coverage in Ireland. I'd recommend getting quotes as I'd only be speculating regarding coverage costs. There are so many factors that play in to it as I'm sure you're aware. This WAs discussed to some degree a while back on the site. Here's that info. I really hope all this helps 🙂 Liam

I don't need proof of residence to open a bank acct? Or even to establish state provided healthcare? Again, getting inconclusive/conflicting info in my own research. I do have the dual citizenship and Irish passport already. My current insurance will cover me through the end of the year. I'm prepared to stay in Ireland as long as needed to sort it out. Just not clear how long that might take. reside a Full year? Guess I'll find out. My current financial advisor firm won't handle my acct if I no longer reside in the US so will need to find a suitable option. But technically I still reside in US but am traveling long term. It's a little tricky (to me at least...uncharted territory) and I'm officially 'Red Tape Averse'!

Hi Lee Ann, welcome to the site 🙂 Yes, unfortunately it is a very arduous process bringing your pets along when you move. But what else can you do.... This part of the move is ever-changing. I've written quite a lot on the site about it over the years, and there have been many forum discussions too. A lot of airlines won't transport your pet from Arizona at this time of year due to heat (and it may also depend on your pet's breed). For that reason alone, you may have to go somewhere cooler to fly, but explore all options. I plan to call Aer Lingus on Monday for confirmation on your question. They used to be very explicit for a long time, that you had to use one particular pet mover - Pet Express, but that info is no longer on their website. Also, as of now, they do indicate you cannot fly from Hartford, LA, Newark or San Fran and not on Fridays and Saturdays (that's due to the pet inspector/vet in Dublin being unavailable on Sat/Sun. What is the 10 day window that you mention? I know there are timelines you must adhere to, but never had to meet a 10 day one. The Full requirements can be found here if you need to double check what you need Let's keep in touch on your question, and try to get an answer asap. I'll update as I find out more. Best wishes, Liam
