3) Set up PPS, bank account, mobile phone (all need an address)
Is this right? Ideally I WAnt to be looking at places to live at the same time as interviewing for work - will it be possible to sign a lease without a permanent job finalised? I have enough savings to cover the rent and can do temp work if necessary in the interim (I’m looking at senior roles - Sales/business development director level - but it may take a few weeks for the right opportunity to come up). I’m British so don’t need a work permit.
Thanks in advance for any advice
Carole,
The order in which you describe things make most sense. It's a catch 22 with the address a lot of times, so if you have a rental agreement in place, that should work for the needs in #3. A job offer letter may work too.
It's totally at the discretion of the landlord/agency as to whether they will lease to you without a job in place. 3rd parties almost definitely won't allow this. A private landlord might, but it's unlikely. There are short term housing options too. You could go down that route in the short term.
Hi Liam and thank you for the great site 🙂
My wife and I are planning to move to Dublin in the next few months from the UK as British Citizens to escape the madness of Brexit.
I'm really looking for anyone's experience of finding the their apartment/house and how to deal with landlords. Specifically I would like to know how people initially pay for a deposit, ie Cash/Bank transfer etc. I'm in the process of Setting up a KBC Basic Current account for direct debits, standing orders etc but I can't find any Solid information on how deposits/up front rent is normally paid. Would I be expected when looking for an apartment to be carry 4000 euros in cash?
Many Thanks
Giles
Hello all,
Me and my boyfriend (Stefan) of 8 years are Canadian citizens with three children aged 6, 4 and 2. Because of Stefan's father being a German national when he WAs born here in Canada, Stefan WAs entitled to have dual German/Canadian citizenship, as well as our three children. I have WAnted to move to Ireland for a very long time, and at this time, there seems to be a lot of construction (house framing jobs) available and he's had a couple of Solid offers. All that being said, can he just arrive in Ireland and work like that? He's not Irish obv ...

Thanks for the comments Carol..No we haven't spent long periods. Last time the wife and I were there WAs in the mid 90's! for about a week. With the kids being older - they need to be entertained the same WAy we do..which makes it a bit easier. Yeah..I am worried about my wife too as she has always professed she WAnts to live somewhere where the sun shines all day every day...but sometimes we have to make compromise in out life..and If that means ploughing her time into a vegetable patch then that is what she will do as she is strong willed like t ...
I know what you mean by getting enough of dry weather. It works both WAys though. When it's raining hard for a week Solid, and then it dries up for half a day, that can take a toll too.
My wife has always had a hard time with Irish weather. Coming from sunny CA isn't an easy adjustment, especially if you really love getting out and about. But as you say, you can find new hobbies too. And buy some really good rain gear 🙂
Have you been to any of the Home Store and More shops in Dublin? There one in Cork, and it's almost a completely clone of Bed Bath & Beyond in the US. It's either a ripoff of it, or a rebranded version for Ireland.
Anyway... They do have online shipping, and they do have Kitchen goods. I've never bought there, but just checked the site, and they'll deliver to all 32 counties, though not for free.
... or immigration advice nor should it be solely relied upon for your own move, it's just a nice starting point for considerations to make if you are someone in a similar situation.
About me: - I had a job lined up before moving to Dublin. My work permit WAs applied for and approved while I WAs in the US. It WAs sponsored by my new employer.- I live a minimalist lifestyle. I did not need contents relocation (someone shows up, packs your stuff, puts it in a shipping container, and delivers to you in Ireland). I WAs moving via checked/excess luggage and mailing ...

Thank you for your response. The link to the service that you used for moving WAs removed. Would you please resend it?
I finally made it to Dublin with cat #1. I will return to Cali for cat #2 in January. I definitely need to make moving arrangements for a few pieces.
I hope that you and yours are Set to enjoy a lovely Christmas holiday!
Cheers

Thanks for responding. Good to hear you are adjusting to being home. I too plan to move to Kerry, it's a small world. Thanks for the advice on bringing more stuff home with me- it has been on my mind! I have now engaged a financial planner over here to see how I can be optimally Set up when I get to Ireland. I will plan to work there too before I retire as I am still too young to retire.
Sounds like you had been in CA for over two decades, same here. Wishing you luck with the driver's test and with the ongoing adjustment to being home. It sure is a big decision! Regards.
