As a few of you may have noticed I have been thinking of creative ways to accomplish the move. I have shared some of them. For example Cunard is cheaper than a flight, and has a cheap option for moving a dog.
A while back I watched a documentary on different ships. It included one of the ferries that goes from Ireland to the UK in one episode, and a ship that transports smaller boats across the ocean. It followed a shipment from Florida to Seattle.
Then recently had an opportunity to get a hold of a coastal trawler that had been converted to a family boat really cheap. (44 foot ~ 10meters) Brainstorm I had was if I took this on (essentially for elbow grease and some back slip rental), could I fill it up with my stuff and ship it to Ireland when I move.
Short answer is no. Shipping from West Coast of the US to Ireland was quoted at about $1200/foot, with up to 3 month layovers in two or more ports on the way during which I would have to pay slip fees in those ports.
So approx $53k to ship the boat? Holy ....! It'd want to be made of gold.
Keep the creative ideas coming 🙂
Yep, $53,200 to ship, and $3000 in slip fees in Florida was their estimate.
