Hi!

My husband may have the opportunity to move to Ireland for his job and we are considering doing this for a couple years at least...who knows after that. We would be moving to the Dublin area. His office would be north of Dublin, it looks like, near St. Patricks College.

We have 2 children, ages 4 and 8. We would love some guidance on how to find some strong family centered areas within about a 30 to 45 min commute of his work (flexible on this for the right place), as he might be able to work from home some as well.

If you have any advice as to where we should even start trying to figure out even where to look to move, that would be great! We just decided to consider this a couple days ago. We will ask his work of course too. But value any advice here as well.

Also, how soon in advance must we be looking for schools? Is moving this summer and getting them enrolled in schools for Fall a possiblity? We do value good education and school will be important.

Thanks so much! Can't wait to dive into all the info on this site!

Wendy

Hi Wendy, welcome to the site 🙂

As a Corkman, I'm by no means an expert on Dublin living, and best places to live there, so hopefully a couple of others can chime in. However, I ran a Google search earlier for "best places for a family to live in Dublin", and plenty of results show up. Many are written by people like you, after moving there, and offer plenty of great advice.

Regarding schools, it can be tricky to get in to local public schools due to limits on number of pupils. It's harder at kindergarten age, so you might find an easier time with slightly older kids. I'd recommend checking out this blog post on the topic too.

Hi there everyone! My name is Ashley and I have been dating a wonderful guy who lives in Dublin for the past two years.

After many months of waiting for an international internal transfer to my company's office in Dublin, I am now in the final stages of having an application for a Critical Skills Visa sent off for approval, so fingers crossed!

I am excited to be part of this community as it seems to be full to bursting with knowledge and advice, for which I am grateful. I am also looking forward to sharing anything I can contribute.

Cheers!

Hello Ireland Move Club,

my name is Georgios, 31 y.o. Originally born and raised in Greece, I have been living and working in Los Angeles for the last 6 years. It is time for me to go back to Europe and one of the places that I have always wanted to live in is Ireland.

Thus, I have bought my tickets for Ireland for May 2018 and made arrangements for a HomeStay in Galway. I chose Galway as, after Los Angeles, I do not like the feeling I get from major cities as I am assuming Dublin will be. I guess I will know as soon as I stay there.

I am looking forward to this big move of mine and also chatting with you all about this new experience.. Feel free to ask me, consult me, judge me, motivate me or question me! 🙂

Hey Ashley,

Good to have you here 🙂 It'll be great to get your perspective on your move. I'm not sure if we've had a critical skills applicant before. If you'd be willing to share your experience of the process along the way, it'd be great to have it.

Welcome to the site

Hi Georgios, welcome to the IMC

Yeah, you'll find Galway to be totally different than LA. That's probably an understatement really haha

Dublin is fairly metropolitan, but still nowhere near like LA is. It is a big city though, and comes with all of the pros and cons that go along with that tag.

Update us with details as you progress through the move.

Liam

Hi   Cynthia Cynthia i think he won't be needing visa to enter Ireland if he posses Italian work permit or permanent residence because Ireland is part of EU

Cynthia and Derik, if it's just for visiting purposes, then you should be fine. However work permits don't transfer from one country to another, and he would need to apply separately in Ireland if that is the need. More info here:
