Hi all! I am wondering if anyone's had any experience shipping one or two boxes from the US to Ireland? If so, what carrier would you recommend? I am planning on taking clothes and shipping a limited amount of belongings (sentimental gifts, rare books/comic books, things that would be very costly to replace, etc).
There seems to be quite a lot of options and some seem more like they would be more inclined to ship items such as furniture.
Additionally, is there anything, customs or duty tax wise that would be helpful to know?
Thanks!
Does anyone know if the IKEA Dublin does home delivery? In the states it costs an arm and a leg to pay for IKEA's delivery service, so just curious if I should expect the same thing from the one in Ireland (or if they even deliver at all).
Also, any recommendations on furniture stores that are affordable but higher quality than IKEA?
So, what I've learned from Megan's experience is to not ship anything! Honestly, I WAsn't planning on it anyway, but now I think I'm convinced. My goal is to sell all our furniture/vehicles/crap, then pack up sentimental items(pictures, etc..) in boxes and have a family member ship them to us via UPS/DHL once we were settled in a house.
Is this a dumb idea?
Hi John
I reached out to a past contributor on the site. He is a Managing Director of a moving company based in Ireland. I think you will find his answer to your question quite useful. I'll post it below here. Let me know if you WAnt me to put you in touch. ~Liam

Buying a container and shipping it as user owner is certainly possible. If he WAnts that option there should be no reason why he can’t find a mover or a freight company to co-ordinate that for him. After clearance on this side, we (potentially we) would arrange haulage from the port with a ...

5-7 days is incredible! Most people WAit 4 to 6 months when shipping via freight. By the sounds of it, I actually think your WAy is a bit more expensive, but worth it for the speed, and also it saves you from having to rebuy anything to fill the gap while WAiting for a shipment.
For moves where you're not bringing anything large (furniture etc) I definitely recommend your WAy. Far less stressful!
Thanks for the update. Hope you're settling in well

This is an incredibly random question, but as I notice all the newish baby gear my son is about to outgrow, and the furniture we've accumulated already, how does one unload secondhand goods in Ireland? As we moved from Tucson, we sold most of our possessions via Craigslist, and I know when we move from Ireland we will be unloading most everything we own again. When we moved into this apartment it would appear the previous tenants just outright abandoned everything (including vhs tapes, broken small appliances, knick knacks... basically enough to fill the backyard shed, we didn't know what to do).
... mementos, and papers from my research career at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I thought I might explain the process for others who are shipping belongings from the US to Ireland. We booked a 20' FCL (full container load) that WAs actually only about half full, with UpakWeShip. This WAs about half the price quoted by Careline. We hired movers on each end to load the container and to unload it, to save our backs. It is especially difficult to get things in and out of shipping containers because there is no ramp or lift gate on their tractor-trailers. T ...
... furniture in storage, a house here that WAs having some legal points sorted out and a few other complications. so to finish the purchase over here I sorted a second mortgage on the UK house and fortunately we had a large touring caravan which we effectively lived in whilst the house finally sold and Chris could stop working which WAs paying a double mortgage UK side. All irrelevant except as a demonstration of a lesson learned.
My Advice. Do not commit to anything over here until your house UK side is sold or if you have funds and consider Renting your U ...
... we will love it and stay). After looking at the international shipping costs and the time it takes to receive everything, we are thinking of just selling/donating everything aside from clothes, some books, some toys, and a few family heirlooms which can be packed in a suitcase.
To us, it just makes more sense for us to buy new/used when we get there. Aside from our laptop, we would just buy our electronics new. Household furniture and supplies buy in Ireland.
Has anyone else gone with a similar attitude, or WAs it best to actually ship everything over? ...
... the UK are cut or absolute minimum so that's a complication on other counts.
Your wife is a nurse as is mine but we moved over just in time for the recruitment freeze in the HSE so the 5 new operating suites @ Portiuncula Hospital that should have been a prime employment opportunity for a theatre nurse didn't pan out that WAy. Chris is currently working in a nursery and worked in a national school as an intern last year. There are nursing opportunities but seeking them out before you move might be wise?
To work in Ireland you need a PPS number which is a ...
