Got my stamp 4 today it took 10 days in Total and I WAs given 3 years not 1 year. Thank you guys for your information and experiences.
Hi John,
Maybe the information in this new topic may help?
End to end hassle free shipping via ocean seems to be a myth.
Customs may choose to examine your good, or not. If they do, you'll be charged a fee for that too. The fee would amount to a portion of the Total fee for the container your items were in. Hope this helps @johnf
Our experience in the end WAs a Total nightmare. To highlight the experiences we encountered:
- Estimated arrival of 4-6 weeks. In reality, it took five months.
- Charged a change of address fee of $500. Their paperwork listed Dublin UK (we corrected this when noticed as we were getting the quote - the quote! that early! - and they assured us it WAs a typo and they'd fix it), so we had to pay $500 to change to Dublin, Ireland.
- X-ray charge once it arrived in Rotterdam. We had no idea Rotterdam WAs on the itinerary until we received that notification.
- ...

Lots of that Type of rental are offered locally e.g. on the notice board at the local supervalu etc. However there are options.
myhome.ie and daft.ie have rental pages. Tried those?
Also, bandbIreland. But probably gets pricey for a period of multiple weeks or more.
I know my brother uses AirBnB to let out his place. There always seems to be plenty of options on there.
I forgot to comment on the driver's license.
You probably already know about the license exchange fiasco, right? Basically, you are treated as a new driver. People from some countries can exchange their license for an Irish one, but not US license holders. You have to sit the test, AND take driving lessons. I have some info here It's a little old, but mostly (if not all) still correct.
You can drive for up to one year on your US license. Definitely get on the Irish license Asap. It can take a while to get an appnt, and the failure rate for the test is quite high, so a re-do is often required. Like everything else right now, Covid is probably playing havoc on this Type of thing. Being a Seattle resident, any chance you can get a license over the border? B.C. Canada is one of the eligible licenses for a straight up exchange.
... actually buy a house in 2022 (waiting for tax free distribution from I pension). I am feeling like BBQ grills, smokers, sofas, garden furniture and gazebos... can all be purchased here is ISS for less and shipped, but in the end I feel I should just sell I all here and buy stuff there in another year. Are the prices that much more expensive on that Type of stuff to WArrant shipping everything we have?
Hi
I have just started the process of finding an international shipper/mover to move our household stuff from Boulder (near Denver) Colorado to either Cork or Kilkenny in early spring 2021. My estimate is that it will fit into a 20′ container and from what I can tell FCL is best to minimize the handling risk of LCL.
My preference would be to purchase a container so that we can load it ourselves and have the loaded container dropped at our location in Ireland which is out in the country. I can buy a container and have it delivered to my home in Boulder no problem but can’t find any “movers” who will deal with a loaded container. All of the offers so far have been based on using their container and loading it myself. The loading time is limited to 2h before a $85/h surcharge kicks in AND requires loading into the container sitting on the trailer – not the best for loading a piano! Alternatively, and most expensive, is to have the moving company load the container.
The issue seems to be the loading of the full container onto the trailer that will transport it to the shipping port or at least to a container yard for transfer to a haulage trailer to take it cross country to the docks. Same issue at the other end where the container will need to be transferred from the trailer to the ground.
The reason for using my own container is lack of storage capacity at the drop off in Ireland which is solved by keeping the contents in the container until we are able to get that sorted. This prevents us from using a typical moving company who expect to unload the contents at the destination. One solution, if we went with the moving company container option, would be to get the container unloaded into a storage unit. That adds another layer of complication but should be possible to organise if the moving company were willing.
I would welcome any suggestions on how to ship my own container and any companies that can handle this Type of move.
Thanks,John
@skyxnight I don't know the answer to that. Reach out to both immigration depts would be my suggestion. There are email addresses listed for each visa Type.
Unfortunately, in the past when I have asked very direct questions like your one, the response is often very vague. They either don't know, or there isn't anything officially written down in the regulations that applies. Still worth asking. You would think that it should qualify. Living together = living together. Immigration status shouldn't really come into it, but that's just my opinion 🙂 I hope that's the case.
... live anywhere as our work is freelance Type stuff which we could do anywhere (although I need to be able to fly to England about once a month for a few days). So we could basically choose any area to live in, the most important factor is meeting our son's needs. We do not WAnt to live right in a city.
I have plenty of experience of negotiating the SN education system in England, but am not sure how it all works in Ireland. How easy or feasible would it be to pick a school, move to very near to it, and apply to get into it?
If we made the huge decision to ...
