Hello everyone,
We are a family with kids currently living in the US and would love to make the move to Ireland. My husband works remotely and can live anywhere. I am wondering if it is even possible for us to move and if so, what visa or other requirements would we need? In Order to apply for a work permit it looks like you need to have a job with a company that is in Ireland, so that wouldn't work for us. I can't find any information about our particular situation.
Thanks so much!
Laura
... and we are WAiting for our shipment 🙂
But, they are based in New Jersey and only handle international shipping. Their closest facility to us in Maine is in Boston, which is only 2 hours away. This is what their quote states as included in the cost - will come to your house and package your items appropriately, as well as log the items with you present, ship your items by truck down to their port facility in New Jersey where it will go on a shipping container, the container will be cleared through England before being sent over to Ireland where they arrange ...
... - is there anything else we should be aware of? Your post on drivers licenses WAs helpful - looks like we will need to go through the whole process... We will begin looking into health insurance options once we arrive - is it typical for employers to offer insurance as a benefit in Ireland as they often do in the US?
Any resources on employment with organisations that promote local agriculture?
Any advice is much appreciated!
... If you WAnt to commute 2 hrs each WAy to work you can find much cheaper. On top of federal income tax (roughly 25-28%), CA has 13.3% state tax, highest in the country. As Liam mentioned, 1% property tax and the additional add on; homeowners insurance, homeowners association (pays for community pools, parks) which could be $150-$400/month, earthquake insurance (still WAiting the the "big" one to happen, ect). I commute depending which office I work at anywhere from 20-55 miles each WAy. Current petrol prices $2.65/gallon. I do find in Ireland they tend not to ...
Not every solicitor will demand a consultation fee in Order to answer a few immigration questions but most do require it. Different from the US where an attorney WAnts to sell YOU their expertise before money is exchanged. How do you know if the solicitor is any good unless you speak with them beforehand? This is just one of the many differences been doing business in Ireland vs. the US. Would a job seeker ask for payment from the company before an interview? That's kinda the right analogy.
Anyway, Stamp 0 is a pretty esoteric process and I doubt an immigra ...

You will have to move over first to meet the criteria, even for Credit Unions these days. Its not a problem I still have a UK account registered at my Daughters that handles some standing Order commitments there.
Check what your bank (UK) charges for ATM withdrawals in € and work the best WAy of sorting that. My Halifax account WAs great when it charged £0.50 per transaction but it now charges a set fee + a % which makes it terrible for transfers.
You will also have to sort out the pension payments once you have opened an Irish account.
I'm pretty sure you must move to Ireland first, as banks require an Irish address in Order to set up an account.
Hi Liam,
That's not terrible, especially since it looks like a one-time fee rather than a per item charge. I did some more research on the website and it looks like you have to Order in-store to have the items delivered, you can't just buy online.
I WAs hoping to just buy online and have the items delivered to save a trip into a Dublin. But I guess a 2 hr drive to Dublin is no different than the 2 hr drive we currently have to make to our local IKEA in the US.
Looking at a move in April so trying to get our ducks in a row.
Carol,
thanks for posting that update. It is also important to ask the immigration officer at the port of entry for as long a visitor stamp as possible. Having time on your side to get everything in Order before you must register with GNIB will make life a whole lot less stressful.
They should understand that it'll take a while to gather the paperwork needed, so discuss that with them if possible at the airport, before they stamp your passport.
... regular national/state school and will be learning Irish, are they required to learn any other languages? If so, are the choices limited?
From my own experience growing up in the states, I wish that a second language WAs more prominent in the curriculum. Only Spanish and French were offered in the area I grew up in and it WAs only required for 2 years in high school. So I can really only Order food or ask for directions, haha!
