Hello! My name is Kevin. My family (wife, 13 yr old son) and I are planning our emigration from the States to Ireland...I'm sure to have plenty of questions to post as our departure date draws near (right now it looks like early summer), but for now I'm busy 'shopping' for a shipper. We will have one Full 20' container (FCL) to ship (and probably a follow-up container of less timely items once we're settled) from Long Beach to Dublin.
I'm surprised to hear of the wide disparity in prices that we are quoted, and worried that some shippers are merely trying to get out business with an attractive quote.
My only questions at this point for The IMC :
1) Has anyone heard of / dealt with either Schumacher Cargo (based in Long Beach) or Inter Movers (based in New Jersey)?
2) Is there any shipping company that any IMC members would recommend? A shipper that stands head and shoulders above the rest for price and service?
Any insights are appreciated. Thanks.
... policy that has affect in Ireland. The following link over at the INIS site explains why/how
Regarding costs for medical, it can vary greatly. You could go with an Irish plan (e.g. VHI, BUPA etc), or a US based one that has Full coverage in Ireland. I'd recommend getting quotes as I'd only be speculating regarding coverage costs. There are so many factors that play in to it as I'm sure you're aware. This WAs discussed to some degree a while back on the site. Here's that info.
I really hope all this helps 🙂

I don't need proof of residence to open a bank acct? Or even to establish state provided healthcare? Again, getting inconclusive/conflicting info in my own research. I do have the dual citizenship and Irish passport already.
My current insurance will cover me through the end of the year. I'm prepared to stay in Ireland as long as needed to sort it out. Just not clear how long that might take. reside a Full year? Guess I'll find out.
My current financial advisor firm won't handle my acct if I no longer reside in the US so will need to find a suitable option. But technically I still reside in US but am traveling long term. It's a little tricky (to me at least...uncharted territory) and I'm officially 'Red Tape Averse'!
If you're in IT, engineering or similar, there are plenty of jobs that will employ you before you return. Many of those recruiters are Full of it though so be careful. I returned first and looked for jobs after.
Hi Lee Ann, welcome to the site 🙂
Yes, unfortunately it is a very arduous process bringing your pets along when you move. But what else can you do....
This part of the move is ever-changing. I've written quite a lot on the site about it over the years, and there have been many forum discussions too.
A lot of airlines won't transport your pet from Arizona at this time of year due to heat (and it may also depend on your pet's breed). For that reason alone, you may have to go somewhere cooler to fly, but explore all options.
I plan to call Aer Lingus on Monday for confirmation on your question. They used to be very explicit for a long time, that you had to use one particular pet mover - Pet Express, but that info is no longer on their website. Also, as of now, they do indicate you cannot fly from Hartford, LA, Newark or San Fran and not on Fridays and Saturdays (that's due to the pet inspector/vet in Dublin being unavailable on Sat/Sun.
What is the 10 day window that you mention? I know there are timelines you must adhere to, but never had to meet a 10 day one. The Full requirements can be found here if you need to double check what you need
Let's keep in touch on your question, and try to get an answer asap. I'll update as I find out more.
Best wishes,
Liam
... in my family.
Steff ( my gf) followed me over here after 3 months while the tied up a few loose strings over there. she came over on a one year working holiday. Her visa comes to an end in 1 month. We are looking at defacto as an option to stay here but I think we are lacking evidence. We did not live together over there and have no join bill etc. Also we are both camera shy and have only a hand Full of pics.. All from 2015 dated..
sunce she came over to Ireland we have gathered evidence over the last 11 months, joint bills, join bank account etc.

Hey Everyone,
Liberty also insures drivers on an American License - it is expensive, but your options are limited. I WAnted to point out that it is possible to get insured on an American license for a second year, as long as you have a Provisional Irish license.
We are now entering our second year here in Ireland, and started the Irish License process about 5 months ago. Obviously, it is best to start this as soon as you possibly can, however with work and kids it can prove difficult to find the time for the lessons.
I think it is assumed that you can o ...
... I need to be close to my family.
I am retirement age, still working in Design Build in Sacramento, CA. USA. My partner, is younger, and 4 years away from Full Social Security. We would WAnt to move together. Although unmarried, we have been together for 18 years.
We WAnt to buy a cottage/house somewhere near to my children and KT's family.
I've had the great good fortune to visit Ireland twice. Once nearly 20 years ago where Kev's family accepted me WArmly. Then Jeff and I went 12 years past, again, welcomed into Kevin's family.
When first I went to ...
Hey Stuart,
welcome to the site. Sorry to hear about your employment trouble. That must be very disheartening.
I'll give you my take on your questions, numbered as above.
1. If you're willing to take anything, Full or part time, I'd say this should be easy enough.
2. Some would. However, most will interview a candidate for a position if they are a good fit, even if they are in the UK. It's a one hour flight from almost anywhere in the UK to Ireland.
3. Unfortunately I do know some people who have been out of work for a long time., However they are generally looking for something very specific.
4. Finding somewhere to rent would be very difficult without a job in hand or significant savings that would get you through a long unemployed patch.
I know some of this is vague but I hope it helps. Feel free to ask questions as they come up and be sure to search the other topics for other relevant information.

... with the positions I apply for and they are well within my capabilities and level of experience. I have over 7 years experience in office administration and I'm a part qualified accounting technician (as they are known in Ireland) and I would have hoped to have received at least an interview invitation during this time, but sadly none have come my WAy.
I check all the common job sites (jobs.ie, irishjobs.ie, ie.indeed.com) and I have been in contact with several agencies (La Creme, CPL, FRS, Brightwater).
I am starting to seriously consider moving to I ...
