... a 12-hour journey across the Atlantic. I thus broke up travel plans, as follows:
Domestic: United Airlines charged $125 pet fee to book flight, nonstop, from SMF>EWR. Motel 6 offers pet-friendly lodging near EWR.
International: Delta booked my cat, in-cabin, and provided dimensions for pet carrier as required for the Air CRAFT type. I returned to my reservations and found NOTHING about my cat, etc. When I called Delta, a note had been added to my reservation that NO IN-CABIN travel allowed for my cat. Cancelled entire reservation, with promise to write ...

3. Buyer representation isn't very prevalent in the Irish property scene, however a number of realtors, or buyers agents as they appear to be referred to in Ireland, are popping up. I'd recommend getting in touch with a few, looking for references, finding out if they operate in your desired area etc. Typically they charge a percentage of the home purchase price, so plan accordingly.
4. where to buy is primarily a personal decision. Are you l ...
Hi all,
New to the forum so please excuse any faux pas :).
My mom and I are hoping to move to Ireland for a year on June 1. I have a small yorkie who I do not wish to send via Air cargo. I can fly into Paris with the appropriate EU Pet Scheme documents.
I've been advised that he can travel within the EU on those documents for up to four months (longer than we can, if our retirement visas aren't approved!)
Our plan is to then take the Irish Ferry from Cherbourg to Rosslare. Has anyone done this with an American pet?
Would love any experience/input!
... what worries me, what confuses me and how to go about job hunting 🙂
We are planning a move to Dublin next summer (probably August) and our biggest question right now is how easy it will be for my husband to get a job permit and a job. We are both currently employed but expect that it will be easier for him to get a job in Dublin while it might take longer for me. He is a solutions architect for a telecom company and has over ten years experience. I recently switched careers from nonprofit fundraising to public health. I graduated with a masters of public ...
... them by Cruise Ship but I than have to get them from England to Ireland. This part won't work for me. It's also a lot more money than flying as I have very big dogs and would need two crates on the ship. I have been told this by the Cruise people.
Deborah - I feel your pain! I have gone through this process quite a few times, and each time is difficult knowing that there are things that could go wrong along the WAy. I absolutely hate handing my pet over to someone, and having no control over their safety for the length of the journey.

Hi Colleen! It's good to have you here.
If you WAnt my opinion, I'd certainly leave them behind if it's just for a few months. It's costly, time consuming, and pretty stressful all round trying to arrange the move for an animal. I'd also add that it is difficult to find accommodation with animals in tow. A short term rental through something like Air BnB will be easy on your own, but the cats will make it harder to find places that you can stay. Let us know what you decide. You always Skype with them 🙂

Hello!
This is an important thread. I cringe at the challenges of bringing beloved pets into Dublin. What I am reading online is NOT encouraging.
I have two 15-year-old cats, 100% indoors, good health, friendly, homebody cats. Melvin & Priscilla.
I am thinking of flying them in cabin from CA > NY, then spend a couple of days in a pet-friendly hotel. I believe that United, Delta, and some other Airlines will accommodate that as long as the cats fit under the seat, etc., and don't cause any fuss.
Next challenge is to get them across the Atlantic to Dublin. I have figured out a couple of options, and I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.
1) Call the Airlines and see what their policies are. Aer Lingus, Delta seem to be options, but it seems that TSA recently (July 2021) eliminated emotional support status and is only assuring that seeing eye dogs and other pets trained for disabled owners will be allowed in the cabin.
2) Go to a travel agent and make all arrangements through the agent.
3) Maybe try NY > Amsterdam or other city that is close to Dublin for in-cabin, then short (hour) flight for cats in cargo. Give kitties calmatives so that they don't die of fright in the cargo.
4) Take the Queen Mary II . . . cats won't stay in rooms but they won't have the risks associated with Air pressure, pitch dark/scary, etc. associated with cargo for five hours. Passengers may visit with their pets during certain hours of the day so that pets know that their humans haven't abandoned them to cargo. Queen Mary II will arrive in England, then maybe take cats on ferry to Dublin or else very short trip in cargo. Queen Mary II is not budget-friendly travel.
Their cat sitter will fly with us. She will take one cat; I will take the other.
I will have their vet complete paperwork about immunizations, etc., 10 days prior to arrival and take paperwork to USDA for certification. As soon as we arrive, I will take cats to IE vet for EU paperwork. Cats will have their EU Pet Passports ASAP.
Am I missing anything????? THANK YOU for suggestions.
Pat
I have flown from NYC and LA to Ireland with dogs. Dogs that would have otherwise fit under the seat. Unfortunately they have to go as checked baggage or cargo.
I have never quite figured out if this is some sort of international Air transport law, or just Airline policy. But, I WAs never able to locate a carrier that would take them in the main cabin.
See Aer Lingus' policy on it here
If the process is still the same, it could be due to how they are picked up by a 3rd party in Dublin, and taken immediately to the vet facility to get checked out. Yo ...

I personally am using a pet relocation service because as I moved to Dublin solo I have enough on my plate that I needed someone who does this professionally to take care of all the details and make sure I didn't make a mistake. I didn't WAnt me pets sent back on a plane because of a mistake of mine. Others have said it's easy to do on your own but you have to have very fine attention to detail and triple check your information (internet can be tricky you know). I am using a company called Pet ...
I have posted here before, but infrequently and probably not in a while. I obtained my dual citizenship with Ireland in 2016. My wife, who is American and cannot get Irish Citizenship would also be affected by what ever will hit us. I am weighing costs. What does it cost to live in Dublin, or Cork, or out West near Sligo? I understand it would be a broad picture of what reality costs, but I have no idea. I would have to get a full time job and rent a 1 bedroom apt. Living in the USA is becoming very expensive, healthcare, housing, insurance (killing me). We will not be eligible for USA retirement until 2023 (age 63) at the earliest. So we would live and work in Ireland. Where do I start? If we move it would be in summer of 2018 when our 1 and only goes to college, probably here in the USA. My options would be to move in with my 85 year old mother (lives in San Jose, USA), who I like and really enjoys my and my wife company, move to Ireland and start fresh or figure something out in between. I know I would have to get a rental, get proof of renting to get healthcare, get a job and then there is my wife. What does she need to do? Lost and without answers. I read on the internets etc, seems like I will have to be "boots on the ground" and do research from Ireland. And it seems until you get to Ireland, all is up in the Air until you visit the local Garda and state your intentions, and have a house and a job etc. Catch 22? Anyway, I appreciate any input and experiential help.
