... be paid out of pocket. New WAter charges, a relatively new property tax, TV license fee etc.
Here's some of the text of my most recent conversation with @soju4321 who's concerned about the cost of living in Ireland:
soju4321: "Coming from CA and living in Ireland, how comparable are the cost of living/monthly expenses between the two? E.G. Rent/utilizes/car insurance (transportation) / medical insurance?
What scares me is all other expenses in Ireland such as coal. In CA we hardly use the Heater during the winter. Tv tax, owner credit card and back accoun ...
... or immigration advice nor should it be solely relied upon for your own move, it's just a nice starting point for considerations to make if you are someone in a similar situation.
About me: - I had a job lined up before moving to Dublin. My work permit WAs applied for and approved while I WAs in the US. It WAs sponsored by my new employer.- I live a minimalist lifestyle. I did not need contents relocation (someone shows up, packs your stuff, puts it in a shipping container, and delivers to you in Ireland). I WAs moving via checked/excess luggage and mailing ...
Compared to the UK where property tax starts at over £1,000 plus WAter Rates the cost of property tax in Ireland is under 10% of UK costs.
Heating and lighting is about the same although both countries have increased a lot in recent years. We still use Wood and Coal but then we are in a traditional cottage out in the wilds and 12 miles from the nearest bus stop.
Road Tax in the UK caps at around £200 for a road car which is about where Irish road tax starts. Insurance (car) is a little cheaper in Ireland. We drive a lot more over here than most folk in the ...
Hey Ann,
My in-laws did it many years ago. I don't know any of the details re: costs etc, but I'm sure it can't be cheap to ship a car across the Atlantic.
While in Ireland, you'll find plenty of people driving cars with the wheel on the 'wrong side'. All of Europe, besides ourselves and the UK, drive on the right. You'll find many tourists who came over by ship with their cars. Also, I've known people over the years who have bought cars on the continent, and brought them back to drive in Ireland.
I'm not sure if you'll run in to any Maintenance issues e.g. finding replacement parts and having higher cost repair fees.
Have you looked into the transport costs? I'd love to hear what it entails.
Make sure the house you plan to leave is Sold and paid for
Make sure the house you are moving to has everything you need
Make sure your medical needs can be met.
Fact is that we had done the research before we moved. We made the effort to integrate from day one.
Points if you are moving to rural Ireland, Introduce yourself at the post office that handles your mail, invest in a small generator before the winter (power cuts can happen and could take some time to fix), be sensible/practical about car choice. Remember your neighbours know the area better than you and have lists of Maintenance/repair and get things done folk that will take you a long time to generate. Never be afraid to ask what seems like a stupid question it probably isn't.
trying to get the right balance of hot and cold WAter, is it? And then someone elsewhere in the house turns on another one, and ruins the balance 🙂
Hello everyone,
New member here. This site has already been very helpful and I am glad to finally register and introduce myself. (My screen name is Kevin in Irish, alas without the accent above the í) A little about me: I am a scientist living in Southern California. I WAs born here, but lived in Canada and the San Francisco Bay Area for many years (grad school, postdocs, etc.). My grandmother WAs born in Dublin in 1911; we have the birth record listing her address, date of birth, her father's occupation (worked for Guinness), etc. My other ancestors are m ...
Hi Guys,
I WAs wondering regarding the "Transfer of residence".
If for example we have 2 cars to import, will it be a problem at customs, regarding the tax relief ? I mean one car is mine and one is my wife's do we submit 2x 1076 ?
Furthermore if you have 2 x 1076 and we are 3 persons for the list of things do we have to make 3 lists or just one big list with belongings.
Another thing is regarding the evaluation of you personal belongings. I mean how do you do it, you can put a value on things thinking how much you would get if you sell them but that is di ...
Making the move next June. The plan WAs to move later this year, but we WAnt to travel Australia and New Zealand for 3 months early next year, so we postpone Ireland till June next year. Also, if would be nice to settle in during the summer months.
Born and raise in Ca and Mexican food is on the top of the list. Tomatillo for salsa verde and cilantro are on my list to plant. Also, to make friends with a butcher that can cut tri tip. WAlked into a butcher and he had no clue what a tri tip cut WAs. I guess it's a west coast thing.
Thing I will try and fit ...
I am UK born Irish bred spent time both sides the WAter living and working. Been here for 8 years exactly and neither of us would go back.
You will get a lot of Irish saying how good it is in the UK, lots of Jobs, great roads wonderful heath service and education. The grass is always greener?
If you balance out prices there isn't much to chose.
Instead of paying £100 per month council tax, I pay €90 a year.
Car insurance is about the same slightly cheaper here once you factor in the exchange rate.
Car tax is WAy more expensive but fuel is cheaper s ...
