... or immigration advice nor should it be solely relied upon for your own move, it's just a nice starting point for considerations to make if you are someone in a similar situation.
About me: - I had a job lined up before moving to Dublin. My work permit WAs applied for and approved while I WAs in the US. It WAs sponsored by my new employer.- I live a minimalist lifestyle. I did not need contents relocation (someone shows up, packs your stuff, puts it in a shipping container, and delivers to you in Ireland). I WAs moving via checked/excess luggage and mailing ...
... Priority Mail. This is the least expensive option that the USPS offers to Ireland, with a 66 LBS maximum weight. That heaviest Box would cost about $250. $200 insurance comes with that, and you can add up to $450 more insured value for a small insurance fee. The postage fee is by weight but there is a max size limit (109 inches girth plus height, I think. Our Boxes were 18" cubes, "heavy duty medium" from Lowes or Home Depot). It comes out to about $44 for an empty Box, and everything in it is about $2/lb extra. For one high-value Box with lots of electroni ...
Claudia, I could see how that would make the unpacking process a little painful. I did number each Box and wrote a brief description of each Box on a piece of paper and emailed that to myself. In addition my movers numbered and barcoded each Box for tracking purposes. It's possibly something to insist on.

@harpchic42 Hi Tanya,
you can probably ship it in a hard container - something like a wooden Box with inside padding. That Box can then be shipped as part of a larger shipment with other people's things. Oops, just re-reading your post...if you're only staying 3 months, you'd be there and back before your shipment arrives most likely.
I'd check with FedEx/UPS etc for international rates and options. I'm sure you're not the first person to ship something large internationally.
... there are some options for Box trucks. For example vanrentals.ie have some for rent that you can use a regular car license for e.g. You might WAnt to call ahead to see if they'll accept a US license.
You're certainly right that you could save a lot by dropping the shipment off and picking it up. I explored all options too, and ended up going with door to port service. The pickup location in Ireland WAs local so I didn't need to worry too much about the cost of returning the truck (petrol, time, mileage, insurance etc). You might WAnt to weigh that up be ...
Hey Tim!
Welcome to the community. Glad to have yourself and the family onboard. Hopefully you'll find some of that craic here 🙂
That's cool you've been able to pass on citizenship to your daughter through her great grand parents. You had to have been a citizen before she WAs born for her to qualify, correct?
Ireland certainly is an attractive option for raising kids. The education is great, and quality of life for families is generally very good. Sounds like Molly is also in for a jet setting lifestyle 🙂 lucky her.
As you probably already know, Dublin ...
Hi! Any advice on moving approximately 20 Boxes of personal effects? USPS will be around $100 per Box. Need to know how to fill out US postal form so as not to pay Irish import taxes too. Thank you, mary pat
Hi!
We have a pet bunny and would like to bring him with us on our move. We've researched the documentation that we will need prior to moving him, but we are wondering if rabbits are a common pet in Ireland. Will we be able to find vets that can work with him? Will we be able to find rabbit food and hay (he uses hay in his litter Box)? Here in the US, we have local "House Rabbit Societies" where we can purchase all of his supplies, and they will board him when we travel. Are there places like this in Ireland?
Hi Liam, I have to tell you finding this site WAs both a fluke and a godsend. Here is our situation quickly, my wife immigrated to Canada with her parents in the 70's. My family is Canadian from 1750's. We met, were married almost 29 yrs ago, her parents moved back to Ireland post wedding by about 2 wks. Since that time we have raised our children, put them through university and now with degrees in hand, our time has come. We travel over or back in my wife's case, every 2 yrs to visit my wife's family. The thought of my wife being with her family has been a ...
... there will an exam this year. If the exam were to happen this year I would have to establish work permit in Ireland to be seated.
My question is once I establish a work permit (Stamp 4) is there a time Frame where my wife and I can't leave Ireland? Just say the exam is in August, can my wife and I go to Ireland few weeks before the exam and we both go to the local immigration for a stamp 4, can she leave the next day back to the states? We're flying into Ireland this weekend for 2 weeks, can we just get the work permit next week and freely leave Ireland a ...
