... or immigration advice nor should it be solely relied upon for your own move, it's just a nice starting point for considerations to make if you are someone in a similar situation.
About me: - I had a job lined up before moving to Dublin. My work permit WAs applied for and approved while I WAs in the US. It WAs sponsored by my new employer.- I live a minimalist lifestyle. I did not need contents relocation (someone shows up, packs your stuff, puts it in a shipping container, and delivers to you in Ireland). I WAs moving via checked/excess luggage and mailing ...
... Priority Mail. This is the least expensive option that the USPS offers to Ireland, with a 66 LBS maximum weight. That heaviest Box would cost about $250. $200 insurance comes with that, and you can add up to $450 more insured value for a small insurance fee. The postage fee is by weight but there is a max size limit (109 inches girth plus height, I think. Our Boxes were 18" cubes, "heavy duty medium" from Lowes or Home Depot). It comes out to about $44 for an empty Box, and everything in it is about $2/lb extra. For one high-value Box with lots of electroni ...

Things that "keep me up at night" which I will be searching the forum for discussions of (if anyone WAnts to link me to good threads feel free!):
- I've been looking for studios or roommates on rent.ie and daft.ie but won't really be able to get to much into it until I arrive. I am having my two cats flown out to me (using a pet relocator) after I've secured an apartment. Wondering how much trouble I will have finding pet friendly apartments? Lots of these website don't even have a search filter for "pet friendly".

Claudia, I could see how that would make the unpacking process a little painful. I did number each Box and wrote a brief description of each Box on a piece of paper and emailed that to myself. In addition my movers numbered and barcoded each Box for tracking purposes. It's possibly something to insist on.
@tcduffy98
@harpchic42 Hi Tanya,
you can probably ship it in a hard container - something like a wooden Box with inside padding. That Box can then be shipped as part of a larger shipment with other people's things. Oops, just re-reading your post...if you're only staying 3 months, you'd be there and back before your shipment arrives most likely.
I'd check with FedEx/UPS etc for international rates and options. I'm sure you're not the first person to ship something large internationally.
Hi,
My name is Zelimir Turkalj and I am planning to move from Croatia to Ireland, Cork in a few months. We are family of 4, maybe 6, depends if wife’s sister and her child will move with us.
I’ll search about Cork in threads and hope to find everything I need to know especially about renting a property for start. I know that’s the biggest issue Atm.
Any advice is more than welcome.
Bigjo
You will have to move over first to meet the criteria, even for Credit Unions these days. Its not a problem I still have a UK account registered at my Daughters that handles some standing order commitments there.
Check what your bank (UK) charges for Atm withdrawals in € and work the best WAy of sorting that. My Halifax account WAs great when it charged £0.50 per transaction but it now charges a set fee + a % which makes it terrible for transfers.
You will also have to sort out the pension payments once you have opened an Irish account.
... there are some options for Box trucks. For example vanrentals.ie have some for rent that you can use a regular car license for e.g. You might WAnt to call ahead to see if they'll accept a US license.
You're certainly right that you could save a lot by dropping the shipment off and picking it up. I explored all options too, and ended up going with door to port service. The pickup location in Ireland WAs local so I didn't need to worry too much about the cost of returning the truck (petrol, time, mileage, insurance etc). You might WAnt to weigh that up be ...
Irish people LOVE credit unions for savings, but for day to day banking needs they are not as efficient as banks. They are still very much catching up in terms of Atm access, online banking etc. for savings though, and small loans, then be sure to open an account with your local CU.
Regarding banks, there a few big ones (AIB, BOI, PTSB...). This site, is invaluable in helping choose a bank. It'll help you get a good idea of what's on offer, and what their various rates are.
Hi! Any advice on moving approximately 20 Boxes of personal effects? USPS will be around $100 per Box. Need to know how to fill out US postal form so as not to pay Irish import taxes too. Thank you, mary pat
