Seeing as everyone else is going to probably state technical advice, I will state some human ones. 1. Get out and go places. The move is difficult and time consuming. If you don't get out and go places, you will get culture shock and depression no matter where you move. If Ireland is best in one area, it's the amount of stuff to do and places to visit. Even if you have the worst luck in the world during your move, you won't care, as long as you get to see what you're gaining and remind yourself of it regularly. 2. Write a letter to yourself now, stating your determination and love for the move. When (not if) things get difficult, take a look at your note. It's easy to forget the positives later when things get difficult. 3. Stay positive! There is plenty of people about to judge and make negative comments. It's your life. You ARE making the right choice. You know what's best for you and if you are positive in Ireland, there is no better place to be! On the same note. Write Down the worst case scenarios for each of the elements of your move. Laugh at them all, realise that if they do happen, they are adventures and something to tell friends over a pint in 5 years time. Positivity! It's an adventure! Enjoy it. Some of it you will enjoy looking back on although it will suck at the time. But without adventure, life would be so dull!

Wow, I've not visited the forums in a while. I think my first Irish winter has basically had me in a state of hibernation for the last few months haha! But I have been meaning to ask... is anyone here familiar with Gaeltacht? My year five student is due to take a week long field trip to Donegal this summer, as required by her school to satisfy her Irish language requirement (she attends a second language school, so the Irish is dialed Down, and it would seem a week of compulsory Gaeltacht is part of the compromise). I've not yet sent my kids to a camp of any sort and the notion of sending her to one in a country I'm still fairly new to is making me a bit nervous. But nearly every local I've encountered seems familiar with Gaeltacht, so is this customary? Thoughts? Advice? Experience?

Interesting question, Tony. I remember thinking about doing the same with another EU country. I can't remember which one, but some do allow US license exchanges. They also allow Irish exchanges. So the example would be go from US license to EU Country license to Irish license. There WAs a reason it wouldn't work, or at least wouldn't work for some time. I think it WAs Down to residency in the other EU country. I'll dig in to it again, and see if I can remember why.

My plan is to negotiate this if I can, prefer to get farther from London to bring housing prices Down. I do get a company car that I can use for personal reasons, so that will help tremendously. Again, I'm hoping it works and I can tough it out long enough to gain citizenship, and since I'll do some traveling perhaps a company in Ireland will offer something.
