Thanks Liam; sounds like good advice. In the meanwhile, I did pose the question to rep at Schumacher who does not anticipate a problem since it is likely more in the nature of an antique or a piece of furniture. But, an email to customs couldn't hurt to double-check.
hi my name is Ronan originally from Ireland and living in Vancouver working as a mechanic, thinking of moving home but WAnted to bring my tools and tool box, some of my furniture and possibly a car if it WAsn't to much hassle, it would be a track car so not one for driving on the road, WAs thinking of arranging a 20 ft container but hard to choose a company that you can trust, any company names ? does anybody know if I have to pay custom fees entering Ireland?the fact they are my own personal tools and not for resale, and my car won't be driven on the road ...
... been in Colorado USA for the past three+ decades. We are both disturbed by the current political and cultural climate in the states. I have always had a deep desire to live by the sea (Colorado has many fine qualities-- but no sea!). We're looking at a possible move to Ireland as a WAy to address both these things.I'm particularly looking at a move to Northern Ireland in the Bangor/ Donaghadee area. Why? My criteria for an "ideal locale" are #1) by the sea! Ideally I can see it from my house. Or at least be within a minute or two WAlk. #2) a town that is s ...
Hello,
Myself my wife and my 2 daughters would like to move over to Ireland from Leicester (UK). We need to WAit at least 3 years due to my youngest daughter finishing her education.
I have before marriage, lived and worked in Dublin during the 1990’s and as a family we visit Ireland regularly. We are Ideally after living somewhere not in Dublin as we would prefer to live somewhere more rural.
I currently work as an Artworker/Project Manager for a Graphic Design Consultancy and have been doing so for over 22 years now at various companies. As I am in m ...
Hi all! I am wondering if anyone's had any experience shipping one or two boxes from the US to Ireland? If so, what carrier would you recommend? I am planning on taking clothes and shipping a limited amount of belongings (sentimental gifts, rare books/comic books, things that would be very costly to replace, etc).
There seems to be quite a lot of options and some seem more like they would be more inclined to ship items such as furniture.
Additionally, is there anything, customs or duty tax wise that would be helpful to know?
Thanks!
Does anyone know if the IKEA Dublin does home delivery? In the states it costs an arm and a leg to pay for IKEA's delivery service, so just curious if I should expect the same thing from the one in Ireland (or if they even deliver at all).
Also, any recommendations on furniture stores that are affordable but higher quality than IKEA?
So, what I've learned from Megan's experience is to not ship anything! Honestly, I WAsn't planning on it anyway, but now I think I'm convinced. My goal is to sell all our furniture/vehicles/crap, then pack up sentimental items(pictures, etc..) in boxes and have a family member ship them to us via UPS/DHL once we were settled in a house.
Is this a dumb idea?
This is an incredibly random question, but as I notice all the newish baby gear my son is about to outgrow, and the furniture we've accumulated already, how does one unload secondhand goods in Ireland? As we moved from Tucson, we sold most of our possessions via Craigslist, and I know when we move from Ireland we will be unloading most everything we own again. When we moved into this apartment it would appear the previous tenants just outright abandoned everything (including vhs tapes, broken small appliances, knick knacks... basically enough to fill the backyard shed, we didn't know what to do).
Hi everyone,
Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere but a quick search didn't turn up too much. My wife and I are moving to Ireland from Cape Town in June and the biggest worry for me is finding somewhere to live.
We'll both be arriving without work, which isn't Ideal but seems unavoidable, but I do have an Irish passport and my wife does qualify for a Stamp 4 so finding work shouldn't be impossible. I have lived in Ireland previously and so do have a PPS number which should also help. My questions are really as follows:
1. I remember from when I lived in Dublin previously that jobs were essential for renting. If you didn't have one hardly anyone would look at you. We will have fairly significant savings to tide us over while job searching and we will have opened an Irish bank account to hold these savings. Will this help? Is there anything we can do to streamline this?
2. I also remember that letters from previous landlords were quite important. My wife and I have owned our own flat for the past 5 years so we don't have any landlords to get letters from. Would letters from our building's body corporate help?
Basically, we are going to be hitting the ground quite cold and any advice to make this process a bit easier would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance....
Hi James, and welcome to the site. It's good to have you here.
That's probably one of the toughest things to weigh up right. It's hard to know what a good salary is. It'd be Ideal if there WAs a x amount in one country = y amount in another. Not from an exchange rate, but from the actual cost of living.
It'd be impossible for me to give you a number that would work for a family of 4. What's good for one, may not be for another. However, the following may help
A post I wrote about the cost of living in 2014
Things I think Americans will find expensive ...
