Brexit passed with 51.9% overall. Scotland, Northern Ireland, and most of London voted to remain.
So from here - at some point the UK Government will invoke Article 50. Most likely in October. That will start a 2 year timer on the UK leaving the EU.
If the EU signs off on countries following the Vienna Conference of 1969, UK citizens living in the EU would be able to remain if they are living there before the 2 years is up should be able to stay. In addition for Ireland there are agreements going back to the 1920's that let UK citizens live, work and vote in the Republic of Ireland. Those require sign off by the EU because they are a treaty between a EU country and a country outside of EU. Some EU countries are talking about punishing the UK for this referendum which brings into question if they would sign off on those treaties.
SNP has already called for a referendum for Scotland to leave the UK and stay in the EU. In addition Sinn Fein in Northern Ireland has called for a vote on reunification of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland so that Northern Ireland can remain in the EU as part of a unified Ireland. At this point I think the Scotland referendum is likely, but I am not sure a referendum over reunification for Ireland would occur.
That being said the UK does not have a single written constitution, and the constitution is as much as about precedence as it is the sum of all the documents that work together. It could be argued that the UK government could ignore the referendum, but it is unlikely and would lead to the Type of constitutional crisis that defines precedence for the UK constitution.
I guess my question is: would he be eligible to work there? We don't fall under any category they have listed for "coming to work in Ireland" so I don't know if our unique situation would qualify for a different Type of visa.
Thanks for the link,
Laura
Depending on what Type of Visa you are applying for you may need to keep health insurance.
For reference of participants not in the US or California. Covered California is the HealthCare Exchange for California, and while I don't know their specific issues, I do know that there have been reports of limited number of doctors, and plans not matching what they were described as.
If you don't file taxes you can be barred from entering the US, have your Passport revoked, estimated taxes set by IRS, and because of FATCA, FBAR, and some reciprocal agreements between countries there are collection options for the IRS even in Ireland.
Thanks Liam for the websites. I've looked into contact lenses last time in Ireland. For the special Type and brand I need I found it much cheaper here in the states. It would be one of those few items I would bring 6-12 month supply and reload when visiting the states once we make the move to Ireland.
Just an FYI - we have a car test in Ireland (the NCT), that older cars must pass at frequent intervals (2 years for most I think), so factor that in when buying a used car. Also, depending on the seller-type (probably doesn't apply to private parties), this may be done in advance, so you're getting a car that has been NCT'd for at least the next 2 years.
For those of you familiar with the US smog test, the NCT is a far more thorough test, which checks the mechanics, tyres, road suitability etc, of the vehicle. There are many reasons a car would fail it, however, a Japanese GPS system shouldn't be cause for failure 🙂
I am not even 6 foot tall so I've never had to really think too hard about what Type of car for that purpose. Try carzone.ie to find cars for sale in Ireland. You might be able to browse by vehicle size. Autotrader also has Irish site.
... (in Ireland) to my Irish-national soon-to-be husband. I have never been in Ireland on more than a 90 day regular visa. I have never been, and won't be, granted any other Type of visa.
I'm looking for some clarification from the information I have found online and am hoping that someone who has personally gone through this process can help me out!
It looks like an individual can be granted permission to remain in Ireland, but is not entitled to a right of residence. One must apply for permission to remain - makes sense.
Under the "how do I apply section," ...
Rikke,
You definitely need to have a backup. It's common in Ireland for people to put their kids name down on a WAiting list from the day the child is born. With people moving around more these days, it's likely that the same kids names are on the WAit lists of multiple schools. You might have seen this post on the subject before.
I'd apply to a couple of public schools too. The WAit list thing is a bit of a fiasco in my opinion. I personally think that people should only apply in the year their kid will be attending, but because it doesn't work like that, y ...
To be honest, I am not really sure. We are in a slightly different situation than Rikke. This is the first time I have read about needing to find a job within 3 months as an EU citizen, so either I WAsn't looking hard enough or I just WAsn't paying attention :-/
My husband will be getting EU citizenship through me early next year. Italy allows spouses to have citizenship after 3 years of marriage without fulfilling any Type of residency. Prior to this August, he would have received the citizenship on the same application as me, however now it is a separate ...
... there are some options for box trucks. For example vanrentals.ie have some for rent that you can use a regular car license for e.g. You might WAnt to call ahead to see if they'll accept a US license.
You're certainly right that you could save a lot by dropping the shipment off and picking it up. I explored all options too, and ended up going with door to port service. The pickup location in Ireland WAs local so I didn't need to worry too much about the cost of returning the truck (petrol, time, mileage, insurance etc). You might WAnt to weigh that up be ...
