This is a very generalized question - but how does hospital care in Ireland compare to that in the states? I ask this because over the past few years I have been reading the Irish newspapers online and at the local Irish-owned pubs in Town, and have been following the articles around the maternity shortfalls in the Portlaoise and surrounding hospitals. As an outsider looking in, it is hard to determine if it should be a concern, or if it just falls under malpractice that is unfortunately more common than not. Even in the states, there are hospitals that are not equipped to handle certain cases and are frankly not up to par. In the news all we will ever hear are the horror stories, and it is not possible to fully grasp the situation. As a mother, who will probably have more children once we move to Ireland next year, those stories obviously make me feel a bit uneasy - but then I take a step back and realize that it may not be any different than what I currently have in the states. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

First, I would like to introduce myself. I am a dual citizen of the US and Italy. My wife and I bought a home in Kerry, have PPS numbers, utility bills, etc. Our daughter lives and works in Dublin, and we plan to move to Ireland full time soon. First we have to sell our home in the USA. It goes on the market in May. I plan to work from Ireland with my current employer or find a new job, which shouldn't be a problem since I'm in the software industry and have EU citizenship. We are having a hard time understanding how the Stamp 4 process works. Does my wife apply during our next visit in April, or can she apply from the USA? Is an application done with both INIS(EU1) and the Garda, or can we just start with the Garda? My employer is in the USA. Will INIS accept a US employer on the UE1 form? Must I be living full time in Ireland for her to get the Stamp 4? If our House does not sell by September, she may move to Kerry, and I would travel between the US and Ireland until our House sells. However we're finding it a challenge to apply for a mortgage while overseas; even once we can provide the work references and letters etc... Bank of Ireland have told us they won't even let us apply until we are on Irish soil. I fear this is going to become a "thing". Has anyone here secured a mortgage before they land? Hi all, a very brief account of myself - I left Dublin back in 1968 to see the world. That's now all done, kids grown up and as my business www.ukrsa.com has already spread to Ireland I am strongly considering selling up in Norwich UK and moving maybe to Wexford. I can run the business as easily from Ireland though I would need to use the ferries a lot, hence the Wexford connection (Rosslare) My House could sell for twice what a good 4 bedroomed House will cost in Wexford, so that's good. Absolutely. We are in the process of moving now. We purchased property in Tipperary Co., had to remove the existing House, get planning permission, and in the process of building a replacement House. Happy to do whatever.

Make sure the House you plan to leave is Sold and paid for Make sure the House you are moving to has everything you need Make sure your medical needs can be met. Fact is that we had done the research before we moved. We made the effort to integrate from day one. Points if you are moving to rural Ireland, Introduce yourself at the post office that handles your mail, invest in a small generator before the winter (power cuts can happen and could take some time to fix), be sensible/practical about car choice. Remember your neighbours know the area better than you and have lists of maintenance/repair and get things done folk that will take you a long time to generate. Never be afraid to ask what seems like a stupid question it probably isn't.
