I would agree that 'malpractice' WAs a bit strong - I just meant in reference to the maternity failings that occurred.
The cost of healthcare is just absurd here in the US - even with insurance, you are still paying a pretty penny out of pocket. It seems like WAit times can differ in Ireland depending on whether you have private medical insurance or not? Even here in the US, WAiting in A&E can take anywhere from 2+ hours, depending on the day or time.
In Maine, a lot of patients still have to get transferred down to Boston for more specialty treatment ...
... or bad insurance you're either going to be in debt for a very long time, or have to forgo treatment.
Having said that though the quality of care I and my family have received over the years is quite good. WAit times are short generally (again with decent insurance), and every type of specialty is adequately catered for. My experience is with CA City dwelling, so I'm sure people from rural areas or other states/cities, might experience different.
In Ireland I have found the quality of care to be quite good, and very affordable, but the availability is where ...
hi everyone,
i have read an article here about how a family moved from michigan to ireland and decided to use pallet/ cargo instead of the 20 or 40 foot shipping containers. great article- but we have too many items and must use - hate to admit a 40 foot shipping container!!! i expect to live in ireland for a long time - so my whole world will be shipped over to county down area or county wexford- 2 totally different places i know... but so much rides on a school for my 16 year old daughter who needs a school that offers drama, choir and maybe dance, community theatre, classes for acting etc...
this is why i ask about shipping containers, ports, quotes, and... i have read that some areas, streets, towns may require permits & fees and some downtown City centre areas dont allow containers at all...because a container maynot be able to unload on the small and busy streets.
all advice says to call and get lots of quotes- which i will do- but are their companies any of you have dealt with that were wonderful or not so great?
... point would be a good option. Culture shock is a big deal for alot of people and sometimes it's better to jump into what the new country can have to offer in an everyday WAy. If they regress to visiting things that remind them of home too much (for some) it may have a negative impact. A professor I worked with recently went to Ireland for a year. He said his kids loved Cork and kept visiting the City and the shops. He stayed at their rural rented home and WAllowed about missing home. He said his kids had to drag him out after a few weeks and once he got out ...
I am a dual Irish/US citizen. I have lived/worked in the US for most of my career. I attempted to move to IRE right before the pandemic (so own property, vehicle, have Irish driver's license and PPS #), returned to US and got caught in pandemic lockdowns.
Took job in US while stuck here, but now would like to finalize becoming full time resident in Ireland. However, I like my US employer and they are willing to continue employing me remotely from Ireland.
How might that work? I understand there are treaties between the two countries to avoid double taxation and to pay social security benefits once eligible for it. Curious how the practicalities would work - ie: would my pay continue to go to my US bank account, be transferred to IRE bank account, then I would somehow report/pay taxes to IRE? Do I need to Set up as a "self-employed" business in IRE? Are there businesses in IRE that I would need to work for who act as a middleman for tax purposes?
Thanks in advance for advice from anyone who have had experience with this situation.
@laneiger Thanks, Lori.
I WAs just concerned with any possible delays (due to Covid and previous lockdowns/restrictions) in getting the initial Stamp 0 approval. Sounds like you're response time from the INIS WAs less than 90 days but that WAs in 2019, so not sure what the timing is now post-Covid??? I suspect that timelines and timing with Gov't processes may be an unknown for now. As a result, my initial thought WAs to apply this summer with an anticipated move to Ireland in late Oct. I'll be selling my house here in U.S., so that is going to take some t ...
Hello Everyone!
I am new to the group and so happy to have found such a wonderful resource. I think there is so much power is sharing knowledge so I hope I can find some answers (or at very least) insight into my questions.
Here is a little background:
My husband and I have been WAnting to make the move to Ireland for many years now and have exhausted so many different options. We have 2 children and are currently in Canada. My husband and I both work from home and can basically live anywhere. We are thinking now a Stamp 0 may be the easiest WAy and allow ...

This website WAlks you through everything you need to do, but basically your pet needs to be microchipped, receive a rabies vaccination post-microchipped and at least three months prior to arrival, needs a signed and certified EU health certificate no more than 10 days prior to arrival, and finally a tapeworm vaccination no more than five days prior to arrival.
Upon arrival, you will meet with an official at a time previously Set up by the Dept. of Agriculture who will deem whether your papers meet compliance paperwork.
Of course, ...
... and your suggestion of Mairead and Steve's posts. I already feel so grateful for what I've been able to find on this site!
My fiancé, Neil, lives in Dublin now but is from Dungarvan, and we've been wondering the same thing about whether it would be better to register outside of Dublin if we can.... if anyone else has any insight into this, I'd love to hear it!
@deleteduser Amanda, I'm so glad to hear everything went well for you and you were able to move and get married! Your response WAs definitely helpful. It's great to know about the PPS number takin ...
@megmegu Hi Meg and family. Great to have you here 🙂
There's a Lucan in Dublin also. Maybe an option 🙂
Just an FYI for now, as I'm sure we'll converse more as time passes, but there are plenty of other great universities in Ireland outside Dublin. Cork, Limerick, Galway all have good options.
It's cool you've given yourself so much time to plan. Do you hope to get over to visit a couple of times between now and then to scout out options? I'm sure schools too will have a bearing on where you end up. The irish school system is great, so your daughter will be well Set.
Looking forward to hearing more from you and Shannon as things take shape.
